City postpones vote on Peacock Ridge annexation

The Shelton City Council on Tuesday evening
postponed a vote on annexing 370 acres of Peacock
Ridge into the city because about a dozen nearby
residences hadn’t received notices from the city on
the proposal.
The council voted unanimously to move the vote
to the meeting at 7 p.m. March 7.
Jae Hill, the city’s community and economic
development director, speaking in place of an ill
Senior Planner Jason Dose, said about 12 residenc—
es within a 300-yard radius of the proposed an-
nexation did not receive mailings from the city. He
recommended moving the vote to March 7, which
would also allow residents to see a list of frequently
asked questions about the proposed annexation on
its website.
City Manager Jeff Niten said the city wants to be
transparent on the proposal and the postponement
will give residents more chances to comment. He re-
iterated that no development is currently planned
for the land, and hearings will be conducted when

kind of response we get from the community
I think we probably need to have a discus-
sion among‘ourselves,” said Port of Shelton
Commissioner Sue Patterson.
“With the three of us, we’ll need to have a
public meeting I have no idea about how
the other two commissioners feel about this,”
said Port Commissioner Dick Taylor.
The members of the commission had ques-
tions and concerns about how annexing into
the city would affect Sanderson Field and the
other Port properties on the site, including
water, sewer and taxes.
The sole purpose of a port district is eco-
nomic development.
“Economic development is going to happen
whether it’s city or county property,” said Port
Executive Director Wendy Smith.
Niten said that if the port property was
annexed into the city, the city would provide
police services; fire from Central Mason; and
street maintenance such as chip and crack
sealing. When he said the city would provide
snowplowing, Taylor mentioned the port has
snowplowing operations at Sanderson Field.

The port would not be required to take city
water, or the two systems could be combined,
Niten said.
“The water is kind of a concern,” Smith ‘
said. The city’ 5 water contains chlorine, while
the port’s water comes directly from a well,
which is preferred by some of the port’s agri-
cultural tenants, she said.
The land the city is offering is zoned resi-
dential. The port could maintain the trees and
allow the site to be used for recreation, Niten
said.

development is proposed. No one from the public
commented at Tuesday’s meeting.
Four property owners petitioned the city for an-
nexation of forested Mason County land behind
Olympic College Shelton. Green Diamond Resourc-
es owns two parcels totaling 240 acres, JPS Proper—
ties has almost 40 acres, Alpine Evergreen owns 50
acres and Bence Parcels has 41.2 acres. The neigh—
borhoods bordering the properties are Terrace
Heights, Manke’s Alpine View and Hiawatha Park.
The land is designated for neighborhood residen-
tial, and is part of the Shelton Urban Growth Area.
