lucky. Thankfully, Dis-
trict 5 has done a good
job providing support for
mainland with its paid
on duty staff and from
neighboring volunteer
stations and have helped
by keeping Station 7 at
Spencer Lake staffed
during the day. But with
call volumes increasing
and financial constraints
that all departments are
experiencing, the need
for trained volunteers
is as important as ever.
Having more volunteers
available for more time
can only lead to quicker
response time and bet-
ter and safer service from
your fire service.
I'm asking that those
who read this column
spread the word and I
would love to talk to any-
one that might have in-
terest in helping in some
way and explain what
joining the fire depart-
ment would entail and
how to get started. They
can contact me directly
(I carry volunteer appli-
cations with me) or call

Neuerburg Mason 5.
The second presenta-
tion in Harstine Island's
Inquiring Minds series
for 2011 is set for Sun-
day, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. in
the community hall. For
those of you who enjoyed
the first program by Har-
riet Baskas, we have a
second that promises to
be every bit as good. Our
speaker is Michael Her-
schensohn, whose inter-
est in historic buildings
led him to complete a
degree in preservation,
planning and the history
of American architecture.
His presentation will
feature historic buildings
from across Washington
State, as well as the peo-
ple who occupied them.
The doors of the hall will
open at 1:30 p.m., so all
are invited to come early,
socialize and enjoy cof-
fee and cookies with our
speaker. Admission is
free and we look forward
to having a large and en-
• thusiastic crowd.
It's getting closer - the
annual Kiwanis crab and
clam dinner. The dinner
will take place March
19 in the cafeteria at
our own Pioneer School.
There will also be a great
live and silent auction. If
you have anything you
would like to donate to
the auction, give me a
call at 427-9516 and I
would be more than hap-
py to come by and pick it
up.
