t IVH\ I KGIRLS BAS K ETBALL Owls advance to WlAA regional , finish third in districts By DEAN SIEMON The Mary M. Knight High School girls basket- ball team have advanced to the regional round of the 1B WIAA state tournament after taking third place in the District IV tournament. The Owls (9-12) defeated Lake Quinault High School (6-12) on Monday at Monte- sano High School in Monte- sano, 47-36. Linda Cook led the Owls with 14 points and also had 19 rebounds, 12 of which were on defense. "Linda is the big reason for this win," said Owls head coach Lance Valley. "She came in big for us." While the Owls won the two previous meetings during 1B Coastal League play (January 8, 53-45, and January 28, 33-30), Valley not expect a walk in the park. "I knew it was going to be a battle," Valley said. Mary M. Knight led 14-6 after the first quarter, but the Lady Elks gained two points for a 23-17 halftime score. The Owls took care of the ball a little better in the second half- only eight turnovers in the second half and 19 overall. "It was a season low for Illl ... Miranda Sowle contrib- uted 12 points, as well as five assists, five steals and five rebounds. "Miranda stepped up again," Valley said. The Owls lost their pre- vious district game on Sat- urday at Centralia High School, losing 46-42 to Co, lumbia Adventist Academy (6-1). The Owls led by one point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 12-7 in the final frame. Cook led the team with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mary M.
