Manke placed sixth in the 145-pound
weight class.
Shelton's other state participant
was junior Gable Lacy. Lacy went 0-2
on Friday in the 182-pound weight
class and did not advance to the second
day. It was Lac: s first trip to the state
tournament.
Paller was the only state returner,
aider placing eighth last year in the
182-pound weight class. This year, he
went 4-2 in his matches.
The last Climber to place fourth at a
state wrestling tournament was Jona-
then Dennis in 2012.
It was Manke's first time participat-
ing in the state tournament ai r quali-
fying last year as an alternate. He went
3-3 in his matches.
Coach Chris Lacy said he was proud
of his team's effort.
"It's nice to bring home three state
medals," Lacy said. "We always would
like more, but the kids we had wres-
tling here did a free job."
Pallets final match of the day was
against Chief Sealth High School se-
nior Daron Camacho. What Camacho
lacked in arm length and size against
Paller, he made up in agility and
speed. As the mats were being rolled
up for the finals, Camacho and Paller
faced off.
Both wrestlers clashed on the mat
and as Camacho tried to collar tie
Paller, the senior outmuscled Cama-
cho's attempts. Camacho earned the
first points of the match with a take-
down. But after resetting the bout af-
ter both wrestlers stepped outside the
mat, Paller escaped for one point.
In the second period, the only points
scored were an escape from Paller. It
tied up the match 2-2.
During the final period, Camacho
earned one point from an escape and
one point for a technical violation
called on Paller. It was enough to give
Camacho a 4-2 win and the third-place

ment, Manke battled a rib injury he
got at the subregional tournament
two weeks ago.
"It was kind of like a double grudge
match because it was the third time he
and I wrestled," Manke said. "He kind
of wrestled better every single time
I wrestled him. He had some strong
grips and strong throws. He got a good
squeeze on my ribs, so that didn't make
anything easier."
Coach Lacy only had positive praise
for Manke's final performance.
"He wrestled really well in a very
tough and competitive weight class,"
Lacy said. "The best match he wrestled
was probably the first one this (Satur-
day) morning. He beat a very tough kid
from Ferndale. It was a great match
and a great performance for him."
The only Climber who didn't ad-
vance to the second day was junior
Gable Lacy. Even though it wasn't the
result he wanted, it left the junior hun-
gry for more.
"Next Monday, there is freestyle
practice, so I'm just going to work
on being aggressive from then on,"
Lacy said Saturday. "So starting next
Monday, that's when the process re-
starts."
Shelton finished its season 6-1 in
the 3A Narrows League. The team fin-
ished second in the regular season be-
hind Lincoln High School. Coach Lacy
said the team is still going to be in good
hands next year with incoming fresh-
men and wrestlers gaining more expe-
rience this year.
When Manke finished his final
match, he stopped and stared around
the Tacoma Dome. He said he enjoyed
hearing the roar of the crowd and the
freedom to wrestle with no regrets.
It's the end for now, but he only has
well wishes for next year's squad.
"Good luck for the Highclimbers in
the future," Manke said. "That's all I've
got."
