I By JOHN BOGGS The Shelton Highclimbers evened their league record at 8-8 Friday night when they defeated the Tumwater T-Birds in a tough, physical game, 57-49. Two senior guards, Doug Long and Terry Knight, combined to lead the Climbers to the win. Long, a starter, scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Knight came off the bench to score 15 points. Tumwater won the opening jump, but Doug Long got the first score on a foul shot for Shelton. Tumwater scored four points, then the Climbers scored seven on field goals by Long and Norbert Huber and a three-point play by Drew Eken to take an 8-4 lead. Doug Long was doing a fine job with his tough defense and hustling for loose balls to help TUMWATER'S STAR FORWARD, STEVE ZOOK, received a warm welcome from the Shelton fans. m By JOHN BOGGS The Shelton Highclimbers started off great against Aberdeen Tuesday night, but in the second half the Bobcat's fast break burned the Climbers and Aberdeen took a 77-66 win. Offensively, the only bright spot was junior forward Steve Sparks who came off the bench to score 19 points. Aberdeen won the opening tip, but Shelton scored first on a jump shot by Terry Knight. The Climbers got off to a great start as they racked up eight points before Aberdeen even scored. The Bobcats battled back and took a momentary lead at 10-9, but Shelton answered with a shot by John Eager and went on to take a 17-13 first-quarter lead. In a year when more people are catching extra-large steelhead, Ehner (;ali's 32-pound, 8-ounce steelhead taken from the Cedar River on February 15 tops the list. E.C. Gockerell's 31-pound fish taken on the Bogachiel December 18 is the second best fish this year. For those wishing to try for a super-large steelhead, following are the top ten winter-runs taken in Washington during the 1972-73 steelhead season to date. Elmer Gall, Cedar, 32-8, Feb. 15; Saturday is tourney day There will be a basketball tournament for fourth, fifth and sixth graders this Saturday at the high school gym. This will be the last chance for the youngsters to show off the skills they have learned in the recreation program. Shelton started to get into foul trouble early in the second quarter when Drew Eken picked up his third foul. Barry Gesche got the first basket of the quarter for Shelton, then center John Eager was whistled down for his third foul. Aberdeen scored eight unanswered points alter that as they came back to take a two-point lead, 21-19. The rest of E.C. The second half proved to be a disaster for the Highclimbers. The third quarter started with Drew Eken picking up his fourth foul, and Aberdeen scored seven straight points before the Climbers got their first basket. Aberdeen's fast break was working very well as they built up as much as a 16-point lead, and the third quarter ended with Shelton trailing 59-45. Things didn't get much better in the fourth period either. Doug Long finally started to find the range and Steve Sparks scored 9 points, but it wasn't enough to pull the Climbers up with the hot Bobcats and the game ended with Shelton down by eleven, 77-66. The loss gives Shelton an 8-9 record in league play, and a 10-9 record for the season. Friday the Climbers play their last regular season game at Home against Chehalis. But the Climbers answered by outscoring the T-Birds 11-2 to take a nine-point lead, 24-15. Five of the points came from Terry Knight on three foul shots and a lay-in after a steal. Knight started the third quarter, and the T-Birds scored the first four points before Terry answered with a three-point play.
