Japanese is really quite a
language to learn. It's too bad it's
not taught in high schools! At
first it seems like an impossible
language, with everything said in
near reverse order, when
compared to English. But soon it
all becomes quite normal, and,
surprisingly, logical. At times
though, it can be quite wordy!
One very unique thing about
the Japanese language is that it is
spoken differently in every city!
That is, each city has their own
dialect, or ben. Right now I only
know a little Miyazaki ben. We
are to learn standard japanese
first, which of course, is
understood everywhere. Later we

pick up the dialect. One city's
dialect is not always understood
in another city so standard
Japanese is more important to us.
The dialect that is practically
impossible for anyone to
understand, except another
person front the same city, is that
of Miyazakis' neighbor city,
Kagoshima. Kagoshima is on the
southern tip of this island,
Kyushu, and has a large fine
harbor. Centuries ago, during
Japan's period of isolation, it was
here that spies came front abroad
(mainly China). So a very strange
dialect was developed. Then when
a stranger came to Kagoshima, he
was asked questions in the dialect.
If he could not answer, or
produce a very good reason for
being there, his ears were cut off:
the mark of a spy. This dialect is
still used today. Fortunately,
Miyazaki ben is much easier to
learn and understand !
About 2 weeks ago. on the
4th, the first day of spring was
celebrated here in Japan. The
night before, setaubun, iny family

Japanese custom: the eldest boy
put on a devil's mask, and hid in
the living room. When he was
spotted, everyone threw handfuls
of peanuts at him, until we'd

[-ast week x~rz~s the graduation
exercises at my school, t:or
seniors school ends in early
February. For st)photnores and
juni()ts, it ends in inid-March. This
graduation was vet} low-key,
when compared to ours at
Shelton! Nothing special was
worn, just the regular unifornl
(like the one of nre in the
picture.) Hardly any parents
came. We other students all had
to colne and watch. The
headmaster gave a speech to begin
with. Then everyone's names were
read off and they came tip and
received their diploma. After that,
one boy gave a short speech, and
it was over! Then the rest of the
day was free for everyone, so we
all liked that'.
For me, free days are indeed
welcome (and rare!) as 1 seem to
be always busy. Since I can't
understand the classes in school, 1
have many outside classes. Right
