A STATE BERTH on the line, Shelton's hoop boys and their courtside faithful run the visceral
gamut Saturday night in their district championship-bracket quarterfinal showdown in Tacoma
with the Roughriders of Port Angeles. That's opening-round hero and first.team all-leaguer Cur-
tis Trondsen catching a quick breather in the upper right, and clockwise from the top in the
insets are fellow first-team all-leaguer Corey Golob weathering another slap-happy defensive
storm in front of the Climber bench, standout junior guard Alex Olson beating the Roughrider
press, cheerleader Kimmi Beeby going white.knuckled for the cause and veteran coach Mark
Jensen plotting strategy with Oison as junior teammate Will Trondsen, Curtis' brother, looks on
beside him. As the fans' expressions in the nearmost photo clearly attest, the Climbers gave up
an eight-point advantage in the final three minutes and wound up on the short end of a 56-46
decision, leaving them one last chance to make it to the All.Washington dance. That win-or-go-
home shot is tomorrow night at 8 against Auburn at Mt. Tahoma High School. If the boys win
they will clinch their first state berth in no fewer than 30 years at Shelton High.
THE VAGARIES OF hoop fortune register variously on the Climber boys and girls in their quest
for district laurels and more last weekend. At the left, rawboned sophomore forward Trevor Peter-
son arises with a smile after getting fouled hard in the paint, and in the inset beneath him Climber
guard Alex Olson (22) battles for a loose one before a goggle-eyed backdrop of Port Angeles fans in
the final frantic seconds. At right, in the girls' successful backs-to-the-wall battle with Evergreen
of Seattle, sophomore Annie Johnson (24) prepares to latch on to a rebound tipped to her by senior

Wednesday, but then the Climbers
did nearly the same to Evergreen
of Seattle Friday night to buy at
least one more night - specifical-
ly tomorrow at 8 at Clover Park,
where they'll face yet another
loser-out test, this time against
Enumclaw.
"And I think we match up well
with them," says Climber coach
John Wallwork. "If we come to play
and we shoot the ball well, and we
go in there with confidence, we'll
be fine."
SUCH WAS NOT to be, alas,
against the Climbers' 18-2 Game
One rivals.
"Auburn-Riverside was just
solid, one through ten," says Wall-
work. "They were good. They have
a six-one girl goin' to Arizona State
next year to play. They have a five-
eight junior committed to Wash-
ington State when she graduates.
And the other eight were just unbe-
lievable. They're a quick, athletic,
solid, smart basketball team."
Better even than Western Cas-
cade Conference champ Lakes?
"Oh yeah," says Wallwork. "In
fact, it'll be interesting. They play
Lakes in one of the semifinals.
"What they have on Lakes:
They're a little quicker than Lakes,
if you can imagine that. They're
smarter; their passing was just
unbelievable. And then they're
better shooters.
"Anyway, we were outmatched,
to be honest with you. But our
girls played hard. They played
very hard. I do not fault their ef-
fort. They played the very best
they could against a very talented
team."
FRIDAY'S VICTIM?
"Evergreen: They weren't the
strongest team," says Wallwork.
"But I thought we played well. You
know, no matter how good or bad a
team is, in the playoffs, and at the
varsity level, any time you hold a
team to five points in the first half
you're playing well. And so that's
what we did against Evergreen.
We really locked down.
"So I was happy with our inten-
sity on defense. They scored right
off the bat. They had a big - six-
foot, five-eleven - post that we
went man. And then we switched
it to a two-three zone. We just got
after it and really communicated.
"We jumped out on them early
and then we kept on pushing. We
didn't let 'em get back into it. And
teamwise we played great ball de-
fensively. So it was good to see our
season on the line - loser-out game
- and they just came to play."
AS FOR TOMORROW, it
won't yield a state berth to the
Climbers just because they hap-
pen to win. Like Enumclaw, they
will need to win that one and an-
other Saturday night to make the
all-Washington dance.
"Kelso and Auburn-Mt. View
are the other two teams that hope-
fully we get a shot at," says Wall-
work.
