City to quiz Taylor's replacement in public
The Shelton City Commission
has begun the process to fill the
vacancy created by the resigna-
tion, effective March 20, of Com-
missioner of Finance and Account-
ing Richard Taylor.
Taylor announced his pending
resignation after accepting the
post of executive director of the
Shelton-Mason County Cham-
ber of Commerce. The other two
commissioners said Monday they
hoped to fill his post by March 26.
At Monday's workshop session,
Mayor John Tarrant and Com-
missioner of Public Works Dawn
Pannell heard from City Admin-
istrator Dave O'Leary about pro-
posed plans for announcing the
vacancy and choosing among ap-
plicants. The commissioners not-
ed that an applicant must have
lived in the city for 30 days prior
to applying.
Plans include advertising the
vacancy and providing would-
be applicants with a form to fill
out, including two questions, one
about experiences that would be
relevant to the post and one about
the challenges facing the city.

m The next "Living Well With Diabetes" class offered by Mason General Hospital is
set for Tuesday to Thursday, April 17, 18, and 19, from 9 a.m. until noon in the Ellinor
Room at MGH.
According to Ste Barwick, R.N., certified diabetes educator and coordinator of
the class, "Diabetes self-management can be improved with proper knowledge and
skills, and most people with diabetes can lead a healthy, active life." MGH has a team
of healthcare providers that teach the class. Studies show that effective self-
management of the disease is beneficial for the patient and their family.
Content of the class includes diabetes diagnosis, proper meal planning, diabetes
medications, exercise, prevention and treatment of complications, stress management,
living with diabetes, and the use of support people and a healthcare team. To
register call Mrs. Barwick at (360) 426-161 I, ext. 3301 (from Belfair (360) 275-8614,
ext. 3301).
m The 6th "Cooking with Xtnh" is being presented by Mason General Hospital's
Sherwood Guild in Shelton. This popular event features gourmet ChefXinh Dwelley,
of Xinh's Clam and Oyster House, Shelton. Xinh, one of the Mason County 2006
American Businesswomen of the Year, has appeared on PBS television, in Sunset
Magazine, and had the honor of demonstrating oyster shucking and preparation to
the late Julia Child, gourmet chef. She has won praise from restaurant critics all over
the northwest.
The evening will begin with Xinh demonstrating the preparation of two of her
well known dishes and a demonstration of oyster shucking by this "Ten-Time National
Champion" shucker. She will also give a brief talk on the various types of oysters
available locally, and guests will have an opportunity to sample local oysters provided
by Taylor Shellfish Farms, Inc. Following the demonstrations, guests will be served
a complete dinner prepared by Xinh with complimentary wine or beer and dessert.
The event will be held at the Shelton restaurant on two nights - March 25 or 26.
Tickets are available by calling (360) 427-4522. The price per person is $50, with
all proceeds benefiting Mason General Hospital.
