(Continued from page 1.)
Dick Taylor of the Shelten-Ma-
son Chamber or Frank Kenny of
the North Mason Chamber. Sev-
eral hundred photos plus written
content will be required for this
eflbrt. While the project is being
led by the chambers, content
providers are not required to be
affiliated with either chamber of
commerce.
"We are going to need hun-
dreds of high-quality tourism-
related photos," Kenny said. "We
also need stories and info from
every area of" the county. The
Web site allows us to show offj ust
how special Mason County is."
On a related note, the North
Mason Chamber has begun dis-
tributing its new 2007 Commu-
nity Guide, a full-color publica-
tion tbcused on the economic
and recreational lifiz of the area.
The editorial inibrmation, along
with full-color photographs,
presents a community image to
attract visitors, newcomers and
new businesses.
ALONG WITH a map of
popular Mason County desti-
nations and sections devoted to
local amenities and recreation,
the guide includes profiles of"
the various communities served
by the North Mason Chamber,
including Belthir, Allyn, Vic-
tor, Grapeview, Treasure and
Stretch islands, Union,Tahuya
and Dewatto.
Chamber members will find
their business intbrmation list-
ed alphabetically on the mem-
bership roster and by category
in the business directory. A spe-
cial advertisers' index is also in-
cluded.
Chamber trustee Pare Merrill
of OUTLOOK Writing & Design
wrote the editorial copy, de-
signed the cover and shot many
of the photographs used in the
guide. The cover photo, taken
from Cedar Street off State
Route 106, is a classic shot
of the inland waters of Hood
Canal, framed by tall firs in the
fbreground with the Olympics
as a backdrop.
The chamber has printed
5,000 copies of the guide, with
3,500 already distributed to local
businesses, post offices, regional
chambers and visitor informa-
tion centers. Additional copies
are available at the chamber of-
fice or by mail. Call executive di-
rector Frank Kenny at 275-4267
to request a copy.
IN OTHER chamber news,
the group is soon set to have
its own radio update on KMAS
1030. Topics include business
news tom North Mason, com-
munity events and more. The
chamber needs a weekly spon-
sor, which will receive an on-
air "thank you," for the cost of
$35. In addition, the chamber is
rolling out a new membership
growth program. It will include
a contest and reward for signing
up new members.
"We are much stronger repre-
senting the business community
s interests when we have a large
membership," Kenny said.
Membership applications can
be found on-line at www.north-
masonehamber.eom.

prairie setting is a crucial part of
the novel. For Jim, as for Willa
Cather herself, the land is time-
less, both a /brmative influence
and a haunting memory.
"It" you've already read this
wonderthl book, read it again.
It'll be a new and rich{r experi-
ence," said Tim Mallory, Timber-
land's adul t services coordi n ator.
This year's program includes
over 65 events. They include
group book discussions; dramat-
ic portrayals of' Willa Cather by
nationally recognized scholar,
Betty Jean Steinshouer, in pc-
riod costume; proibssional read-
er's theater perfbrmances; and
live musical pertbrmances in
the Bohemian immigrant styles
of,gmtonia's era.
THE BIG READ is a part-
nership of' the NEA and the In-
stitute of Museum and Library
Services and Arts Midwest. The
purpose of' the initiative is to
restore reading to the center of"
American culture. In addition to
the $20,000 grant, the NEA is
also providing fYee materials for
the library to distribute, includ-
ing reader's guides illustrated
with photos, time lines and oth-
er images, and teacher's guides
tbr high-school teachers who re-
quest them. The materials are
also available on-line at www.
neabigread.org.
All timberland programs are
free of charge unless otherwise
noted. Anyone needing special
accommodations to participate
in a library's program may con-
