Shelton senior Nic Gove holds the Rudy Award outside of Shelton High School. Gove, a cornerback for the Shelton Highclimbers last fall, was the
Rudy Award winner for fall 2011.

then finished out strong his
senior year.
"I started the season at
quarterback but then moved
to cornerback," Gore said. "I
felt the team would do bet-
ter with Jared [Welander]
as quarterback. A lot of peo-
ple disagreed with me but I
felt it would do Jared good
and get him ready for his se-
nior year."
Goye started to enjoy
playing defense during foot-
ball camps last summer.
"I liked the physicality of
defense," he said. "You have
to be really athletic to play
on the defense. It's a strong
bond with the whole defense
to play on that side of the
ball."
One benefit to playing
cornerback was that Gove
was noticed by college re-
cruiters. He will play for
Southwestern Community
College in San Diego next
year.
"I thought 'Why would
colleges pick a 5'10" quar-
terback who can't see over
the line?'" Gove said with
a chuckle. "After that~ l
switched to cornerback. 1
haven't been to Southwest-
ern Community College yet
but I'm really looking for-
ward to it."
He said Southwestern
stresses academic success.
"Their big thing is to re-
cruit out of state and help
players get to the D1 level,"
Gove said. "Since I'm from
out of state, they have a
rule that I have to come
down as soon as I can and
practice."
Football practice begins
on June 26 and Gove is hop-
ing to be in California before
then.
"I'm hoping to start im-
mediately, but I think I
have to wait," he said.
While at Southwestern,
Gove plans to get his pre-
requisite classes out of the
way so he can transfer to a
four-year university. He's
also thinking of majoring in
sociology.
• "I know I have good peo-
ple skills and hope I can go
into something with that,"
he said.
As for a dream school,
Gove hasn't really picked
one yet.
My options are pretty
open right now," he said.
"I'd like to play at San Diego
State or San Jose. I really
like SDSU; they have a good
organization."
Gove is planning on try-
ing out for Southwestern's
basketball team as well.
"It'll be tough being a
walk-on, though," he said.
Outside of school sports,
Gove's life continues to re-
volve around sports.
"I rented out Southside's
gymnasium every Friday
so I can have a lot of pick:
up games," he said. "I try to
get a lot of sophomores and
freshman there to get their
confidence up because a lot
are good but they didn't play
this season."
He said playing sports is
all he's ever really done.
Beyond the sports world.
Gove wanted to offer advice
to his peers.
"No matter the situation.
you can get out of it." he
said. "If you think you have
it hard, remember someone
has it worse so do what you
have to do to get out of it."

Gilbert said the tourna-
ment was fantastic.
"The Emerald Queen
Casino was great and put
on a fantastic tourna-
ment," he added.
Gilbert said he enjoys
throwing darts because it
brings a competitive edge
back to the adult sporting
world, just like adult soft-
ball leagues do.
"All of our friends and
family are getting pretty
good at it." he said.
