Caucus resolutions studied
Widely diverse resolutions are
reportedly being prepared for
discussion and possible adoption
in the Democratic precinct
caucuses to be held March 7
throughout the county, it was
reported this week by Mac
Gearhart, chairman of the Mason
County Democratic Central
Committee.
Among those coming to his
attention, Gearhart said, are
proposals to endorse thePanama
Canal treaties; to endorse
complete legalization of
marijuana and the banning of
commercial promotion of
alcoholic beverages, tobacco and
marijuana; repeal the recent
amendment to the
unemployment laws; adoption of
the closed primary election for
Washington; and endorsement of
a state income tax, along with
the abolition of the B&O tax
and the inventory tax.
There has also been a report
that resolutions are being
prepared to introduce a
requirement that a suitable tax
source be legislated in
connection wtih any law
requiring mandatory action on
the part of counties or
communities within the state.
There has also been interest
expressed in advocating reform
of the National Labor Relations
Act; better standards in the area
of health for .inclusion in the
safety and health laws; reform of
the campaign financing laws to
give a break to minority parties;
strengthening land use policies;
energy conservation; a statement
relating to full employment; the
Equal Rights Amendment; and
many others being prepared for
submission in various precincts.
One subject likely to receive
much discussion is the question
of Democratic Party reform to
provide proportional
representation for counties on
the State Central Committee.
Gearhart said inquiries about
the location, timing and
procedures for the Democratic
caucuses can be directed to any
one of several telephone numbers
including Gearhart, 426-5786;
Arnold Livingston, 426-8181;
Margaret Livingston, 275-6421;
Betty Barber, 426-5986; and
Annette McGee, 426-2120.
