The standout sophomore, ninth at regionals in the vaulting event, scored a fine 8.0 on one of her efforts in the big state finale but was not among the, final group Saturday. "The competition was extremely tough, though," noted Climber Coach Lee Ann Johnson. "Scotti did real well and learned an awful lot. It was a good experience for her." Qualifying for the honor are seniors Allan Eaton, Dave Wicken and Doug Coleman; juniors Eric Valley, Lloyd German and Barry Cochran; and sophomore John Coulon. Valley, second in both the 200 and 500 free in district, represents perhaps the Climbers' best hope for individual honors. He'll be going in the 100 and 200 frees and will also anchor the Climbers' 400 free relay effort. Eric's 1:49.8 school-record performance in the 200 a week ago Saturday in district currently ranks 16th best in the state, and Climber Coach Doug Hanna figures it's unlikely all 15 ahead of Valley will be entered in the .event this weekend. "What's more," said Hanna, "district was only the third time Eric swam the event all year - and the first time he had any competition at all. Really, there's no telling what he can do." Only the top 12 finishers in Friday's prelims go on to the finals. Valley's best in the 100 free, 50.6 - another Climber record - is also competitive, said his coach. "If he can get it down under 50 seconds - and I think he can," said Hanna, "-then he could well make the top 12 in that event, too." Teaming with Valley in the 400 free relay will be Eaton (52.9), Coleman (54.0) and Gorman (54.8). Gorman beat out Barry Cochran for the third-led spot in a time trial just last week. With Cochran in, the group's best time this year was a 3:32.5. The Climber record, set two years ago, is 3:30.8 - and ttanna figures something in that neck of the woods will be required for a Climber placement in the event this weekend. Shelton's other individual performer at state, senior Wicken in the lO0 breast, shattered his own school record with a fine 1:05.5 earlier this season and has improved nearly two full seconds over last year. "Dave's capable of a l:04-something," said his coach. "But so much depends on how he feels this weekend when he hits the water. You see, the breast is kinda funny. One day you can have your stroke down perfect and the next it'll be off -- and having it off just a little can make a whole world of difference in your time." Hanna added that it concerns him most because the UW pool has no warm-up area. The swimmers can't tune up their strokes prior to the heat. "They just have to hope they've got their stroke down perfect," said the Climber mentor. Shelton's other state event will be the 200 medley relay. Sophomore John Coulon will be filling in for Valley so Eric can swim the 200 free and 100 free both, but Hanna advises that the team won't give up much in the bargain. John's time in the backstroke, about 29.0, is just about as good as Eric's, really," he said. "So we could surprise some people there if we put it together." Wicken will swim the breaststroke leg, and his personal best is 29.0 - very fast, said his coach, considering the fact that the breast is supposed to be far and away the slowest leg of the event. The butterfly leg will be manned by Cochran, with a best of 26.6, while Eaton (23.0) will anchor with the freestyle sprint. String together their PR splits, advised Hanna, and the boys should be able to record about a 1:46 in the event. That would be a varsity record, by 1.8 seconds. Do a little better than their previous bests, he added, and they might crack the top dozen. "A 1:45 could do it," said Hanna. Friday's preliminaries are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. The finals will begin at the same time Saturday.
