SEAHAWK SAFETY Dave Brown goes to the hoop last week, trailing

Sneakered "Hawks
shake the Dome
Eight members of the
pro-football Seahawks came to
town last week - as the
"Skyhawks" - and proceeded to
demonstrate to a packed house
at the Minidome that, even with
a round ball, they can put on
quite a show.
After 40 minutes of
infrequently serious basketball,
the scoreboard read Skyhawks
92, Shelton faculty 77. And it
wasn't really that close.
Oh, sure, the teachers had
their share of bulk, too. There
were frontliners Ace Bulger, Rich
Starret and Bruce Phillips, for
instance - collegiate gridders in
their time, all. And Bulger even
played a spell for the pro
Philadelphia Eagles.
But, to be fair, they paled
alongside the likes of the Hawks'
big daddies. Take second-year
defensive end Ruben Hodges, for
instance. Ruben is listed at 6-6,
260 in the Seahawks' official
press book. The stats are
conservative, if anything.
Ruben had this tendency to
kinda grin leeringly whenever
he'd shake the Minidome with
one of his backward slam dunks.
Know what I mean?
Then there was tackle Carl
Van Volkenberg, another
second-year Seahawk. Carl goes
6-5,253. Tight end Ron Haward,
he of the Seattle University
basketball fame, is listed at 6-4,
240. Center Geoff Reece is 6-4,
247.
Heading the Hawks' guard
contingent for the fund-raiser
(money to be used for Shelton's
Hawaii trip next basketball
season) was Shelton's own Doug
Long, second-year defensive
back/wide receiver. Long is 6-0,
190.
Others in the speed
department were defensive backs
Sam McCullum (6-2, 203) and
Eddie McMillan (6-0, 190) and
safety Dave Brown (6-1, 190).
Countering for the faculty, in
addition to Bulger, Starrett and
Phillips, were Gene Crater, Jim
Willis, Ozie Johnston, Brian
Brickert, John Jones, Brian
Fairbrother and Dann Gagnon.
Purposely lax defense by the
Skyhawks let the hosts stay
close, at 43-33 and 57-47 at the
half and third period points,
respectively, but there was never
really any question.
Almost at will, Hodges and
Howard dominated the boards.
And Brown and McCullum,
especially, filled the hoop with
ease from the outside whenever
they decided to turn it on.
Final stats saw McCullum
leading the way for the victors
with 20 points. Brown added 16,
Long 15, McMillan 12, Hodges
11, Howard ten, Van Volkenberg
six and Reece four.
For Shelton, Phillips muscled
for 21 points, Willis added 16,
Bulger and Jones ten each,
Starrett eight, Johnston, Brickert
and Fairbrother four.*'each and
Gagnon two.
BRIAN BRICKERT makes a futile lunge at
Brown.
SEAHAWK EDDIE McMILLAN pops for two over the
faculty's Gene Crater as Ace Bulger looks on.
