SCHOOL NOTES
The Hood Canal faculty beat
the eighth-grade boys last
Saturday night at basketball. The
final score in the exciting,
fun-Fried game was 50-43. $142
was raised that night from
admissions and refreshments for
uniforms for the track team.
Track season starts right after
spring vacation.
The girls' basketball team
will finally play a home game
tonight, against St. Mary's of
Aberdeen. The next four games
will be at Hood Canal, Tuesdays
and Thursdays at 6 p.m.
Choosing the best speller in
the whole country each year
starts at this season. The spelling
bee eliminations have begun at
Hood Canal. The four best
spellers in each class, already
chosen, will compete to find the
two top spellers in each grade.
Then the final spelldown of the
school will occur the first week
in April. The public will be
invited to that tense night. On
April 29 that winner goes to
Seattle for competition m a
statewide spelling bee. The state
champion will compete
nationally in Washington, D.C.
A series of five mini-classes,
the sixth, seventh and eighth
grades at Hood Canal School.
This week was the changeover.
The students rotate so that each
is exposed to the fields of
mechanical drawing,
photography, journalism,
sketching, and a puppetry-drama
class. This widening of their
horizons of understanding
enables each to grow, and at a
future time in their lives, perhaps
elect to further pursue one of
these fields.
Emily Estrada, a native-born
Skokomish Indian, is initiating
the teaching of Twafla, the
Indian lanaguage, in the school.
This program is sponsored by the
Skokomish Tribal Council and
has started with the Head Start
children and the kindergartners.
The fourth and fifth grades
are making a Nootka canoe,
eight feet long, out of papier
mache. They plan to paint the
finished product with designs
from the Northwest Coast.
Mrs. Georgia Oliver toured
the school Monday with her
kindergartners who were proudly
displaying the kites they had
made in art class. The mention
of kites and the sight of crocuses
flowering are all signs that spring
is here.
Spring vacation will be March
20 through the 24th, plus the
weekends on either end of that
week.
