Festival theme, which were re-
viewed before the competition as
well as an on-stage recitation of
the essay.
After last year's queen, Taylor
Robecker, sang the the national
anthem, all 12 contestants per-
formed a dance to a song from the
Disney movie "Alladin."
After introducing themselves,
each contestant answered the
question, "If you could travel
anywhere in the world, where
would you go and what would you
do?" posed by Robecker.
Cervantes answered that she
would travel to forward her goals
of working in forestry.
"I would go to Africa ... they
have some great forest land
there," she said.
Taylor answered that he
wouldn't limit himself to just this
world.
"I would travel to a different
world and ... instruct people how
to live in union," he said. "With-
out all the greed that there is
here."
During the essay portion, all
the contestants stood up and re-
cited their essay, which was sup-
posed to have the theme "Forest
Tales."
Eddy, who won the award for
best essay, spoke about her ex-
periences living on a Christmas
tree farm.
"If a Christmas tree could talk,
what forest tales would it tell?"
she said.
Debi Harvey, president of the
Forest Festival board took the
opportunity during the pageant
to ask for continued support from
the community. She also gave out
awards for Forest Festival but-
ton designs.
"We need people to work on
the float, help with the parade
and there are several positions
on the board," she said. "Let's
make sure we can hit 100 years."
The 2011 Forest Festival is
scheduled for June 2nd through
the 5th.

porting damage in their area
is what we do in small com-

some things we can't ever be

A little bit of sad news
for the island, Margaret
Elizabeth (Glaser) Sim-
mons, passed away Mon-
day, Feb. 14, 2011 at home
in Lacey, Washington. She
was 82 years young, born
November 16, 1928.
Margaret was the sixth
and last child to Hugo A.
Glaser and Celia F. (Yen-
nie) Glaser, of Harstine Is-
land. Margaret grew up on
Harstine where she attend-
ed grade school then went
on to graduate from Irene S.
Reed High School in Shelton,
Class of 1946.
She loved to laugh and
dance and often commented
about how much fun was
had at the community hall,
shaking the rafters on that
old building. She married
Lauren E. Simmons in 1947,
they had two children.
At Margaret's request
there will beno service, but
she will be laid to rest at the
BalloT Cemetery on her be-
loved Harstine Island, when
the weather is warmer and
the days are nicer.
Tara Rigby sent me this
note about the mobile food
bank she is trying to get
started for us. She is the
Community Health Promot-
er for Mason Matters. I'm
not sure if the meeting was
held on the February 24, but
if it wasn't the meeting has
been rescheduled for 5:30
p.m. on Thursday, March
10. If that occurs and you
have invited other people to
the meeting please let them
know of the change. Tara ap-
preciates all of you and your
willingness to come see what
we are working towards in
bringing food security ser-
vices to our community. It's
this type of volunteer spirit
that is so needed in our com-
munity and it is greatly ap-
preciated.
• The island sewing group
is planning this years meet-
ing schedule. They will be
meeting March 22 at Brenda
Stainbrook's home. Their
April and May meeting have
a hostess, but the rest of
the year still needs a little
help. If you are interested
in sewing and want to meet
with a great group of ladies,
let Donna Hamilton know.
A Catamaran was
found on south end Peale
Passage area. If you have
lost yours, please send in a
description, and that infor-
mation will be forwarded to
the person who found it.
