In Memory of Dora Ellen "Dorellen" (Shcppard) Hodge, 80, who died from
pneumonia at Mason General Hospital on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Square Root
Day. She had been living at Alpine Way Retirement Apartments since 2005. She

received her BA in 1951 from UCLA, major in Music, minor in Education. At the
end of her first year of teaching she offered a student a ride home and was hit by a car.
Her pupil's from permanent tooth was broken. Miss Sheppard felt that she had caused
him irreparable damage. Her mother enrolled her at the University of Hawaii, for the summer,
and hoped Dorellen would forget about the accident, but she was still guilt ridden. Her mother then
sent her to Forest Home, a Christian camp, where she heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and accepted the Lord with the aid of
Bill & Vonette Bright in 1952. She attended Hollywood Presbyterian Church where her Sunday school teacher, Henrietta Mears,
encouraged her to enroll at Fuller Seminary and she received her Master's in Religious Education in 1956.
She married Ellison Henry Hodge April 1957 in Riverside, CA. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1968.
She taught school, choir, Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and Child Evangelism Fellowship clubs in CA in Soulsbyville, San
Bernardino, Crestline and in the LA area. She retired from teaching in 1985. She loved Christian music ranging from praise &
worship to heavy metal. In 1982 she and her children attended a Christian music seminar at Estes Park, CO. She became ecstatic
over a new and unsigned artist, Steve Taylor, following his career and enjoying his "refreshing ability to see ourselves in a unique
and thought-provoking way." Dorellen hiked the Grand Canyon, Mt. Lassen, the Sierras and liked looking for wildflowers. She
learned to swim in college and enjoyed skiing, both Alpine and Nordic. With her financing, her older son and daughter opened a
Christian bookstore in Carson City, NV, in 1982: Mter retiring she worked in the store. In 1994 she moved to Shelton be closer to
her first grandchildren, learned to read Greek and attended First Baptist, Faith Lutheran and Shelton Presbyterian churches. In 1995
she was badly burned, due to a kitchen stove fire, went through months of skin grafts, rehab and endured two surgeries to repair a
broken neck, first in 1990 and then in 1998.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, ex-husband and grandchildren: Leslie Frances Watson; Gabriel Josiah Hodge,

A graveside service was held on March 10, 2009 at Masonic Memorial Park in Tumwater, WA. Snow was on the ground for
Dorellen's going away service and then bright sunlight shined down. Mrs. Hodge loved snowflakes as each one is unique and
shows God's unlimited love. If you knew Dorellen and have a memory to share please email the family at Dorellen2009@gmaii.
