;eason wrap--up awards
Dean Siemon
It's that time when all of
that snow we've been "en-
joying" lately is going to
melt away (at least I hope
so) and the spring arrives
just in time.
With sun and the blue
skies, high school sports go
back outdoors with base-
ball, fastpitch softball, boys
soccer, track and field and
golf.
But let's not move on
from the winter sports just
yet. Just like in the fall,
I'm wrapping up the winter
sports from Shelton High
School, North Mason High
School and Mary M. Knight
High School.
But I wanted to start
handing out awards as
well, which some of the
readers have asked for the
Journal to do.
Best male athlete
- Zac Joaquin,
North Mason
wrestling
This really shouldn't be
much of a surprise. When-
ever a local athlete or team
wins a state championship,
it deserves high praise.
Zac Joaquin, a North
Mason junior, had only one
loss in his entire season
and was the first Bulldog
grappler to win a state title
in more than 20 years.
Joaquin also improved
from last season's sixth-
place medal and head coach
Tony Coppinger said in last
week's Journal that there
is already an off-season
workout program to defend
his title.
Best female
athlete- Danielle
Ewart, Shelton
bowling
People at the bowling
lanes tend to talk about the
person who bowled a near
perfect game - especially
when those after the Nar-
rows League tournament
in January found out it was
sophomore Danielle Ewart
with a 288.
In addition, Ewart fin-
ished tied for seventh over-
all out of all 70-plus indi-
viduals at the WIAA 4A
State Girls Bowling cham-
pionships with a six-game
series of 1018 (169 aver-
age).
I wouldn't be surprised
next winter if she flirts
with the perfect game a
couple more times.
Highlight mo-
ment of the year
- North Mason
boys basketball's
Kasey Bielec's
go-ahead 3-pt FG
to defeat Shelton
Having a cross-county
basketball game was an
exciting thought that had
a little more anticipation
after being delayed due to
weather.
While both teams had
below .500 seasons, we saw
a team with first-year head
coach Steve Hackett en-
ter the Shelton Minidome
trailing by 11 showing
poise near the end.
With the game close at
the end, the senior Bielec
received a tipped ball off a
missed three-point attempt
from senior teammate A.J.
Barker to give the go-ahead
lead as the Bulldogs would
win 49-46.
This was easily one of
the more exciting basket-
ball games in Mason Coun-
ty this year.
Most improved
team- Mary M.
Knight girls
basketball
After ending the previ-
ous season with a winless
record, Mary M. Knight
head coach Lance Valley
said his only team goals
were to be competitive in
the team's development.
Now, the Lady Owls ad-
vance to the WIAA 1B Re-
gionals and that is a huge
improvement from the year
before.
With the team's suc-
cess in 2010-11, Mary M.
Knight brings back every-
one - three juniors, two
sophomores, four freshmen
and a handful of eighth
graders that have had the"
chance to move up for early
exposure.
This same roster next
season could be a very dan-
gerous dark horse in not
only the Coastal League
and District IV, but entire
1B classification.
Best overall team
- Shelton girls
bowling
Let's go back to state
contenders receiving high
praise. While Shelton
struggled near the end in
keeping up with now three-
time state champion Em-
erald Ridge High School,
Shelton bowling still re-
turned to state and earned
a fourth-place trophy.
Head coach Curt Sny-
der led the Highclimbers to
their eighth state appear-
ance in the last nine years
and he could have one of
the stronger teams he's had
next season despite losing
senior captain Brittany
Chamberlin.
When two return-
ing bowlers have mul-
tiple scores above 200 in
Mishawn and Danielle Ew-
art, you can be assure there
should be a return to the
state tournament next year
and the Climbers could give
the Jaguars a closer run.
