New coach, familiar face for I-lighclimber soccer this ,p'rng By DEAN SIEMON Marcelino Dumpit has been involved with coaching for the last seven years, since he was 16 years old. While playing on the boys soccer team at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Dumpit coached for Silver Lake FC, a girls se- lect team in Everett. "It'was my little sister's team," Dumpit said. After some time coaching the South Sound Slammers, another select team in Olympia, Dumpit became an assistant at Shelton High School four years ago. Beginning under head coach Tom Pearson, Dumpit started his first year as the coach of the C-team and then the last two years coaching the junior varsity, including last season under then head coach Chad Sweitzer. "It's quite the learning experience," Dumpit said. "I'm pretty much taking the parts [from the prior two head coaches] that I like and creating a positive experience for the kids I'm coaching." But Dumpit is set for his Highclimber head coaching debut in his fourth season in Shelton and is excited for the senior class which in- cludes Cesar Apaez, J.J. Loza and Michael Mil- lard. "I coached these guys on C-team when they were freshmen and had 12 wins," Dumpit §aid. "They know what they can do. This year should be special for them." But the first-year head coach admitted there are some concerns for this season's roster which htad only 27 goals and allowed the third-most goals with 47 in the 4A Narrows League (Foss High School, 90, and Mount Tahoma High School, 48). "I'm a lot more worried about their technical ability and preparation before games," Dumpit said. For the small amount of goals last season, led by Apaez, Dumpit said he would like to set the tempo with a roster that plays all around the: field. .... I want people to train in different positions," Du:mpit said. But the first three games will be a tough test not only offensively, but defensively as well. Their first game of the season is against Bel- larmine Preparatory School (13-4-1, 7-2-1 Nar- rows League) in 2010) on March 16, who had 60 goals as a team. The Highclimbers then face Stadium High School (17-1-0, 10-0-0 Narrows League), who had 90 goals in 2010, followed by Gig Harbor High School (12-3-2, 7-1-2 Narrows League) and their 54 goals last season. "It's going to be tough," Dumpit said. "De- fense is definitely going to be a focus for us." While deciding between either the flatback- three or flatback-four defensive schemes, Dumpit said repetition on defensive drills are important before the season opener against Bellarmine Prep. "We're going to drill our formation," he said. "They have to know where they are going to be." Peterson said the team moved away from the gameplan style used by Central Washington University, where Coach Nesmith and Coach Rob- bins played, and used the state team's style. "I helped form the new plays and how we play the game," Peterson said. While the rugby play- ers prepare for the sea- son, they have all become supporters of other people trying the sport, which is sometimes considered a hybrid of soccer and foot- ball. "Last year, since it was new for kids in Shelton, a lot of people weren't sure," Peterson said. "You've got the con- stant shifting of offense and defense like basket- ball, the hitting of foot- ball - it's awesome," Dean said.
