PHONE 357-3521 The Shelton Highclimber bas- ketball team pulled the late season upset of the league and set what is possibly a school record by downing the Knights of East Bre-~ morton 61-50 in an opening round game of the West Central district play-offs Tuesday. It might be considered art upset, because the Climbers have lacked the necessary outside shooting to cope with the East Bremerton zone defense in previous games, i but Tuesday night in the West: High gym they had it. Dale Huff man poured in 23 points from outside, from in the key, and on driving lay-ups fol- lo~'mg some nifty steals, as well a:; from the foul line. Tom Frcd- .~xm hit for It from the corner and ~!r()ra drives alnng the baseline. TIlE POSSIBLE school record is that this is the first time in recent history that a Shelton team has won a single game in district play. As LI~e district tournament is a single elimination affair, East Bre- morton now finds itself out of the tournament and the Climbers face South Kitsap, winner over North Thurston 68-57, 8:00 Friday night~ at this same West High gym. East got off to a fast start on Tuesday night, and led 4-0 before the Climbers could get on the scoreboard. Five points by Huff- man and two by Mike Brickert saw the Climbers catch the Knights at 7-6 after about five minutes of play had elapsed. Once in the lead, the Climbers never let up and continued to pull away throughout the game. i Shelton led by two at the end of the first quarter 12-10, but a quick basket by Huffman, and three points by Tom Fredson gave the Climbers a six point spread at 17-11 with 6:21 left in the first half. Baskets by Huffman and Larry Powell plus two by Fredson and a free throw by Brickert gave the Climbers a nine point lead of 26-17 with two minutes left in the second quarter. Two field goals by East's Dan Johnston, a free throw by his teammate Erich Steinman, and a pair of free throws by Shelton's Dale Huffman saw the Highclimb- era go to the dressing room at halftime with a 28-22 lead. The Shelton s q u a d hit five straight field goals to race to a 10-0 lead with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Dick Knautz began the scor- ing parade, as he took the ball on the tip-off and drove to the cor- ner for a set shot. Reid Prepper- nau, Mike Johnson, Chief Cla:v- ton, and Johnson again peppered the hoop for the first ten points. At one time in the period Shelton led by eleven points at 12-1. With about three minutes left in the fiI~t quarter West began to find the range, and the period ended 15-5. West put together a big second quarter to out~ore the Lit t 1 e Climbers 20-12 as the half ended with the Climber lead shmmken to two points at 27-25. THE LITTLE CLIMBERS con- tinued their steady scoring out- put with a 14 points third quar- ter while holding West to ten, and ran their third period score to 41-35. In By Mike Isbell Larry Ew i n g, Highclimber wrestler in the 123 pound class, is the only Shelton grappler to place in state. Larry took second in state after decisioning D o n Allen of Burling%on, Real Keatly of Castle Rock, and Ken Vandver of Sumner. Then Ewing met Bruce Shults, of Lake Washington, who pinned him in 5:25, giving Shults first place and Ewing second. Larry has also held a fine rec- ord during the past year at the sub-district and district meets. He placed fifth in district, and be- fore going to sub-district, Ewing had h)st only two matches out of 18. Larry along with Daron Tay- lor went to state last year, but failed to place. THE OTHER THREE Shelton wrestlers were victims of the rule that says if they lose, then the grappler who defeated them loses, they are eliminated. Daron Taylor, 130 pounds, lost looked shaky for the Climbers as East crept up [o within two points at 36-34 with 2:15 left in the quarter. At this point Powcll cart- ned two free throws and Mike Brickert pushed in a rebound shot The lineups: Shelton 47 West 58 M. Again, as in mo,~t of their other losses this year, it was their inability to score consistent- ly over the 1-2-2 zone defense that scuttled the Climbers. Defense prevailed in the first 1:28 of the ball game as neither outfit was able to score. West's high scoring guard Len Costello hit a long shot to start the ball rolling with 6:32 left in the first quarter. Then ShelLon began to find its Center Mike Brickert on the inside of the West defense, and hc tallied all eight of the Climbers' first period points.
