BLAZER GRAPPLER Ray Wiltman puts the finishing
touches on a perfect season in this scene from last Saturday's
South Sound Junior High Tournament in which he copped
first. Wiltman, who had gone undefeated during the regular
season, pinned his opponent in the 176-pound class for one
of the Blazers' two firsts.

Brad Stites and Ray Wiltman,
two Blazer grapplers who went
undefeated during the regular
season, took firsts in their weight
classes last Friday and Saturday in
the South Sound District
Wrestling Tournament.
Stites, who went 10-0 in the
regular season and was 13-0 by
the end of the tournament, won
his first two matches by decisions,
after his number one seeding gave
him a bye in the first round.
In the championship match
with Paul Edwards of Nisqually,
he got the takedown, and after he
was reversed once, proceeded to
gain the 85 pound crown at junior
high district. StiLes won the final
6-2.
Wiltman was also undefeated in
the regular season, and finished
his championship match with a
pin. He had won his first match,
and that put him into the
championship match, since there
were only four grapplers entered
in his class. However, two
matches were all it took for him
to prove himself the district
champ of the 176 pound class.
Stites was not beaten in his
entire ninth grade year, and
retired from junior high wrestling
on top. Wiltman is just an eighth
grader, with another year to tear
BRAD STITES, 85-pound Blazer, tries to get out of a rough
situation in Saturday's championship match at the South
Sound District Tournament for junior highs. Stites went on
to win the match, 6-2, and end his season with a 13-0
win-loss record. He was one of two wrestlers from Shelton
Junior High to get first place in the tourney.

the league apart.
Four other Blazers finished in
the top four. At 99 pounds, Mark
Lewis took third. Lewis was
unbeaten in the regular season,
and came into the tourney one of
the favorites to win the 99 pound
title. He lost his first match on
Friday night, and had to battle his
way through the losers' bracket.
He wrestled five matches in all,
winning the final match by a 7-0
margin for third.
Jack Frost nabbed third in the
106 pound class by winning three
of four matches. Frost won his
first match on Friday, but lost his
second and won two more in the
losers' bracket to finish in the
third spot. He had two
undefeated wrestlers ahead of him
who finished first and second.
The Blazers' 106 pounder won his
third place match in the finals
handily, 10-1.
At 127 pounds, the Blazers got
a fourth place finish from Randy
Howard. Howard lost his first
match, advanced to the finals by
winning his next two, but lost in
the bid for third place.
The heavyweight division also
yielded a fourth place winner.
Gino Ream won his first match,
lost his second, got a place in the
finals by winning again, but lost
his last match.
Frost and Ream will be back
with Wiltman next year to have
another try, while Howard and
Lewis are both freshmen.
The tourney was set up on the
double elimination basis. Unlike
many other double elimination
tournaments, you must lose two
matches personally; nothing
depends on how the person you
lost to does.
Here is a recap of how the
Blazers did individually:
78 - Brooks Farrell won his
first, then lost two.
85 - Brad Stites won all three
matches and took first place.
92 - Kelly Probst lost his first,
won his second, but lost his third.
99 - Mark Lewis lost his first
match, but won four more to take
place.
106 - Jack Frost won his first,
lost second, then won two to
take third place.
113 - Mark Larson won his
first, lost second, won third, but
lost fourth.
120 - Gene Rank did exactly
as Larson.
120 - Steve Fox won his first
two, but lost two in a row.
127 - Randy Howard lost his
first, won two more, and then lost
his last match for fourth place.
134 - Randy Stevens won his
first, lost second, won third, and
lost fourth.
141 - Rick Miklethun won
two matches with byes, but lost
two that he wrestled in.
148 - Lonnie Austin won his
first match by forfeit and then
lost two.
155 - Scott Remsberg lost his
first, won two, and then lost his
fourth.
176 - Ray Wiltman won both
of his matches, the second good
for first place.
Unl. - Gino Ream won his
first, lost second, won third, and
lost his fourth.
Coaches Jon Day and Gene
Crater of the Blazers had an
excellent 8-2 season, having only
one league loss. The loss was to
the top finisher in the league,
Washington of Olympia. Shelton
ended up in the number two spot.
NINETY-NINE POUNDER Mark Lewis works on his
opponent in the match he went on to win for third place in
the South Sound Tournament in Olympia last Saturday.
Lewis was undefeated in the regular season, and suffered only
one loss in the tourney.

Shelton had a field night
against the winless North Kitsap
Vikings in Poulsbo last Friday,
with everyone on the team
scoring, and bombed the hosts
89-61 in their best offensive
evening of the season.
The Climbers had two 26 point
quarters, and dominated the
entire contest from its origin.
They held an 18-8 first quarter .....
lead, and were on top 44-26 at~,.
the half.
Mike Sparks had a tremendous
game from the foul line, and a fair
scoring night, although he played
just a little over two quarters. The
senior forward was nine for nine
from the charity line and added
four more buckets to lead the
Climbers with a 17 point total.
Shelton had an outstanding
game altogether at the line, also.
Four players hit 100 percent, two
more missed just one shot.
Sparks made ten first quarter
tallies to get Shelton off to the
rout. Senior center Brad Jones
added four points.
Senior Randy Lewis and junior
Bob Turner scored six in the
second quarter to lead all of the
Climbers' pointmakers, although
five others scored and Shelton
had 26 points altogether.
It was the last league game of
the year, and the last regular
season game for the Climbers.
Shelton finished just one game
out of the league's top spot as a
result of South Kitsap's upset of
the top team, Central Kitsap.
Coach Terry Gregg finished the
season 14-5, and the Olympic
League, 11-3.
Gregg sent in several reserves,
starting in the second quarter, to
see how they worked with the
team. The results were good, and
Shelton outscored North 19-16 in
the third quarter to post an even
bigger 63-42 lead at its end.
Turner had the most points for
the visitors, with five.
North had its best scoring binge
in the fourth quarter when their
big gun, sophomore Larry
Reynolds, got ten of his
game-leading 23 points. But it was
also one of Shelton's big quarters,
and the Climbers were playing
with their substitutes. Shelton's
subs gave no ground as the Viks
tried to make a game of it.
Junior center Bruce Cole put a
shot up as the final buzzer
sounded for two of his nine
points that were good for the
third highest on the team; he is a
sub.
Mike Bac, a junior guard, had
six points in the final stanza.
Sparks led the team at the line
and on the field with his 17
points. He had four of four free
throws in both the first and
second quarters. Turner was
second in line with 13 points. He
was three for three from the line.
Cole and Lewis each had nine
points, Cole hitting five of six free
ones. Brad Jones, Jim Corey, and
Mike Bac all had eight points. Bac
was two for two in the third and
fourth quarters from the line,
giving him a perfect four of four.
Corey was also hot, hitting four
of five.
Kevin Dorcy made six points,
including two of two free tosses.
Rusty Corey and Rich Walker had
four each, Tom Brigham two, and
Larry OUi one. Four of the
Climbers finished with 1 O0
percent marks from the free
throw line and they shot a sizzling
29 of 35 totalled.
North could convert on only
23 of their 32 attempts. Coupled
with the fact that Shelton made
30 field goals to the Vikings' 19,
it is easy to see how North lost it.
This week marked the end of
Olympic League action, with the
Central Kitsap Cougars claiming
the title for the second year in a
row. Last year they went on to
become the state AA champions.
South Kitsap will be the
league's representative to the
AAA tournament, finishing ahead
of the other two triple A schools
in the league, West Bremerton and
port Angeles. The Wolves of Port
Orchard relied on two upsets to
put them into the playoof spot.
First, they beat Central Kitsap,
and second, East Bremerton
pulled a minor upset over West.
The two schools were tied for the
AAA crown going into the last
game.
The only other game in the
eight-team league was
Bainbridge's romp over seventh
place Port Angeles.
Here are the final standings in
the Olympic League:

Jim Kimmerly Wins Trip
To Swimming Meet
Jim Kimmerly emerged from
the district meet in Olympia last
week the only Shelton
Highclimber aquaman to qualify
for the state meet at the
University of Washington this
Friday and Saturday.
Kimmerly qualified for the 50
meter freestyle race with a time
of 25 seconds fiat. He had that
time in the preliminaries. Even
though he had the fifth fastest
time of the six finalists, he
finished sixth in the
championship race, largely due to
the fact that he had been in four
other races that day.
The highest point total on the
Climber team belonged to Jim at
the end of the season. He had
accumulated 64 while his first
year team was posting a 1-5-1
record.
Prospects look good, however,
for next year's team, as coach
Doug Hanna will lose just two
seniors. Kimmerly will be one of
the many juniors and sophomores
returning.
This year's representative to
state for Shelton also swam in the
400 meter medley relay at district
which placed tenth at district.
The other members of that team
were Dave Lund, Dave Laney, and
Mike Larson.
The only other event that the
Climbers placed in was the 200
meter medley relay where Jim
Dickinson, Jim Densley, Jim
Rogerson, and Phil Krogh got
eleventh.
