They could get the businesses and some volunteers to stage a spruce-up of alleys, parking lots, sidewalks and storefronts. Maybe the city could help out in some way with the project. Keep in mind there is no way the city crews have the means to go every day all around town to sweep and clean sidewalks, alleys and storefronts and do the city projects as well. We all need to do our small part. I really believe it is all a part of doing business and truly being a responsible commu- nity member. This overpow- ering desire is what stimulates each of us to want to do what is necessary to reach our ultimate goal. If the grand purpose of life for an individual is power, pres- tige, wealth or sexual gratifica- tion, the greatest expenditure of energy, causing actions toward fulfillment of that desire, will be put forth and nothing will be allowed to stand in the way of achieving that desire. By the same token if the in- dividual perceives charity, faith- fulness, gentleness, generosity, joyfulness, modesty, patience, peacefulness, self-control, good- ness, kindness and chastity as the hallmarks of a good life, those attributes will be the central fo- cus of that individual's life. It is not humanly possible to find complete fulfillment of any of our desires in this life. We can burn ourselves out by attempt- ing to be immersed completely within any given state of desire. Mankind never has been, and never will be, able to find com- plete satisfaction in anything that life on Earth offers. Yet the urge, the strong desire toward such fulfillment, never leaves us but continues to pres- sure us toward the perceived ob- jective. For example, the desire for power leaves us always desir- ing more power; same with pres- tige, wealth, love, joyfulness and so on. How many devote their whole life toward acquiring the ultimate amount of any given desire and feel empty as a result of failure to accomplish same? Examining the effect capital- istic economics has on our soci- ety I will quote some thoughts from Joseph Pearce. "People matter because they are not just matter," writes Pearce. "They are spirit; they possess a soul. The unleashing of desire in the form of consumerism is today stretching nature's tolerance to the very limits, threatening global ecological turmoil. The accelerating depletion of the earth's finite resources to meet ever-expanding demands for en- ergy and consumer goods has no foreseeable end. "The worship of economic growth as an end in itself is based on the highly question- able assumption that there are no limits to the planet's ability to sustain it. Yet none of these pressing issues are addressed by conventional economics. It doesn't have the answers be- cause it doesn't ask the ques- tions." He closes his book with a few sentences from E.F. Schum- achers's 1973 classic, Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If Peo- ple Mattered: "The violence that is in the process of destroying the world is the cold, calculating, detached, heartless and relentless violence that springs from overextended minds working out of control of underdeveloped hearts. A person who does not feel his thoughts but merely entertains them ... is capable of limitless violence ... He is supremely rational; for him, the only certainty is his own death, and ... his own death is the equivalent of the disap- pearance of the world."
