TAPPED IN THE TIME OUT just preceding (top), all-league senior Curtis Trondsen responds with his buzzer beater to send the game into overtime Friday night in the Climbers' state playoff bid in Tacoma. Alas, after mobbing their all-league senior in the wake of his clutch shot (near), Shelton's boys let their first state tournament berth in 30 years slip through their hands by way of ice-cold shooting in the extra period. From left, near, are Alex Olson (22), Corey Golob, Will Trondsen, Brandon Moore (23), Brett Riley, Curtis and Trevor Peterson. Climber hoop reunion rescheduled Climber hoopdom's fourth unannounced if they so desire, their respective listings as 427- annual Old-Timers' Basketball Reunion has been rescheduled for March 23 due to conflicts with last Friday's district playoff games. Participants may just show up say organizers, but if they're able to give advance notice of their in- tention to play it wouldn't hurt. "Either contact me or Terry. Girls exit with similar 2nd-half fizzle An untimely ankle sprain and an all-too-familiar third-quarter refrain combined to end the sea- son two wins short of state for the Climber hoop girls Friday. Enumclaw overcame a double- digit deficit to oust them 59-47. What happened? "Well-l-ll, ya know, we had a great first half," says veteran coach John Wallwork. "You know, we were up nine, ten points some- times. And then they made a little run to go into halfime. They hit a buzzer beater, a three-pointer. And so we went into halftime up six, just playin' great basketball. "And, granted, you know, they weren't shootin' the ball real well first half. But part of it was our defense. We really got after it. Our two-three zone kinda got at 'em, and they settled for a lot of deep threes that they didn't make. "ANYWAY, WE GO into half up six, feelin' good. And then the third quarter hit us. And, you know, I don't know if you noticed, but this year we've had some problems in the third quarter. We've tried a lot o' things to remedy that. But we just did not have a third quarter that we needed to have against a good team in the playoffs." The upshot? Shelton got out- scored 18-5 - especially glaring in the wake of its all-cylinders-firing first half. "Yeah, and we'd hit some big shots," says Wallwork. "You know, I think Annie (sophomore guard Johnson) banked in a three. And, you know, we had some other things fall for us that were really good." ONE BIG REASON the shots quit falling in the decisive third, reminds Coach, is his girls' lead- ing scorer - all-league junior guard Paige Barrett, with a dozen points in the first half- went down early with a sprained ankle. "She got slammed and came down on the ankle I think a little funny," says Wallwork. "And, you know, that has partly to do with the third quarter I think, too - not just the mental aspect. "I mean, Paige is our best shoot- er. And so missin' her: Obviously that's gonna hurt us a little bit. Scoring's gonna haffa come from other places. "But I was really pleased with her effort - and with all the girls'. I know they played hard. And it was a good position for us to be in, to kinda know what that's like. "And so we return a lot of girls next year, so hopefully that helps them and inspires them to work on their game." The Climbers finished the sea- son with a 10-13 record. They won three games in '05-6. LAST WEEK THEY honored their own in traditional awards- banquet fashion. Recognized for their all-league honorable mentions by vote of the conference head coaches were ju- niors Brynna Fuller, Paige Bar- rett and CarrieAnne Allegri. Fuller was also "Most Valu- able Teammate" and "Ms. Hustle" as well as recipient of the "Detail Award," which recognizes overall excellence on the court.
