CAT-QUICK JUNIOR guard Alex Olson skies for one of the Climbers'
untimely rim-rattlers during Friday's district loss to Auburn at Mount
Tahoma High School.
Climbers run out of miracles
(Continued from page 21.)
Corey (6-4 all-league senior Golob)
and Curtis.
"So we had hoped to do orte of
two things: either break one of
them open or get the ball to Trevor
(6-2 sophomore Peterson) comin'
back and then look up the floor
- which is sorta what happened.
"The ball went to Trevor - from
Alex (5-10 junior Olson), if I re-
member correctly. And Trevor took
a couple hard dribbles to the mid-
dle and then he made a diagonal
pass to Curtis. And we got a much
better look than I sorta thought
we might get."
AND WAS CURTIS' shot sup-
posed to be from beyond the arc?
"No, no," says Jensen. "It was
more a situation where we wanted
to get a good look - and wherever
we get the good look. You know?
"And when you screen a screen-
er, as we did there, it allows you to
get pretty good looks a lot of times
if you catch 'em in man-to-man. If
you catch 'em in zone you don't get
much out of it, cuz everybody's just
playing areas. But they happened
to be in man-to-man, and we got
a good look - and a good shot at it
and tied it."
AS FOR SECOND-guessing
that it wasn't shot from a half-step
further out - thus rendering it a
game-winner instead of an over-
time-forcer - Jensen insists its a
moot point.
"Actually, if Curtis doesn't drib-
ble it's probably a three," he con-
cedes. "And had he shot the ball
better through the night I'm not
sure that he wouldn't have just
stopped - caught and shot it.
"So he'll probably have some
second thoughts about it, but at
the point where he was and what
was goin' on, you know, it's a real
• accomplishment just to make it."
Fact is, adds Coach, it was a ter-
rific shot under the most pressure-
packed of situations.
'Teah," he says. "And you think
back: He hit the big three against
Kennedy. He hit two or three re-
ally big shots through the year for
us, you know - and all in those
situations.
"AND I'M SURE in hindsight
he wishes it was a three. But at
the point he did it, you know, it
was a pressure shot, and he took
it. And he wanted t' take it. And
it went down. So you can't argue
anything about it. It's just one of
those things..."
Give Auburn credit, adds Jen-
sen. "Cuz t' have that happen
to ya," he says, "and then turn
around and play well in the over-
time -" He shakes his head.
"You know, I was more con-
cerned about the jubilation just
bein' so instantaneous that we
wouldn't be able to carry it over
into the overtime..."
JENSEN HAD PRAISE all the
same for his boys' effort as a team,
and he bragged on young Olson in
particular.
"He's real strong," he says. 'Ta
start watchin' when two or three
guys have the ball and he's one
of 'era, a lot o' times he ends up
with it. Ya know? And he's very
aggressive - which isn't always
the nature of some of the other
kids."
Another thing he's got going,
says Coach - and it was evident
when not once but thrice in the
third quarter he outraced his rival
guards down the floor after pick-
ing off passes - is outstanding
quickness.
"Unfortunately the end result
wasn't good," says Jensen, allud-
ing to the three straight missed
lay-ups. "But he got from one end
of the floor to the other quicker
than kids without the basketball
did - which isn't normally how
that goes."
YOUNG ALEX' hard luck at
finishing wasn't characteristic at
all, adds Coach, but his response
to it certainly was.
"His comment afterwards," says
Jensen, was 'I won't miss any more
lay-ups; I'm gonna just dunk...'"
Alex wound up leading the
Climbers with 16 points Friday.
He made three of his eight shots
from two-point range and three
of five three-pointers. Corey, like
Curtis a first-team all-leaguer
this season, added 13 points on 5-
9 shooting inside the arc but was
just 1-7 on treys. Curtis made his
only three-point shot and was 1-7
overall before his buzzer beater.
