Pioneer Hat's on for Seuss books By KAREN EVERETT It was a Great Day/br Up for the children at Pioneer last Fri- day as they celebrated Dr. Seuss Read Across America Day. This event commemorates Dr. Seuss' birthday. He was born in 1904 as Theodore Geisel and wrote 44 boQks for children as Dr. Seuss. By the use of clever rhymes, tongue twisters and zany illus- trations Dr. Seuss enticed four generations of children to love reading. In his book Great Day for Up, Dr. Seuss wrote: "Wake every person, pig and pup, till everyone on earth is up!" Parents and grandparents were invited to celebrate with the children by joining them in reading such classics as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in Socks and many more. It was a special way to celebrate reading and appreciate a gifted author. The Pioneer Math Department under the direction of Heather Ireland has planned a Parents Math Night on March 15 at 6 p.m. in the gym used by students in the intermediate and middle school. With the assistance of Author at MMK Author Renee Riva will be at Mary M. Knight School on Thurs- day, March 22, to lead a workshop and sign books. MMK students up to the eighth grade will be able to meet and in- teract with Riva that day. personnel from Educational Ser- vice District 113, Pioneer teach- ers will guide parents and give tips on how to prepare students for the upcoming Washington Assessment of Student Learn- ing, which will be given at the end of April. Along with going over sample test questions, topics covered will include how to help students relieve test anxiety. Parents will have the use of the school com- puter lab to access further infor- mation from the Office of the Su- perintendent of Public Instruc- tion Web site with the help of the staff in attendance. "The purpose of the Math Night is to talk about how we can help our kids be successful in taking the WASL," stated Mrs. Ireland. Infbrmation about this night has been sent home with the stu- dents. Parents with students in K-12 are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served. Any questions may be directed to Mrs. Ireland at 426-8291. Pioneer snow make-up days have been decided by the dis- trict. This will require adjust- ments on the district calendar sent home last September. The added days are April 2, May 29, June 21 and June 22. This means that June 19 and 20 will be full days and June 21 and 22 will be shortened days.
