In its first league match of the rugby 15s season, the
Shelton girls' team defeated the Rainier Highlanders 84-0.
'iThe first 10 minutes of the game were good because we
played our preseason games against the best teams in the
U.S.," head coach Chris Nesmith said. "The game kind of
fell apart when the girls realized this team wasn't as good
as those teams."
Nesmith said that he refocused the team during half-
time and they came back out in the second half to play like
they normally do.
"The score wasn't higher because it was important to
cycle all of our players," Nesmith said. "Eve~one got equal
playing time so we actually capped the score a bit."
The Shelton girls' rugby 15s team plays in a general
Washington state league. Most of the teams it plays are from
multiple cities instead of one, such as the Shelton team.'
The Rainier Highlanders were from Puyallup, Sumner,

"The Shelton girls took a rookie squad out to grow on
their knowledge of the game," Nesmith said. "The downside
of a game like this is that it can lead to bad habits so we had
to refocus the team."
Nesmith said that since the Shelton team is comprised
of athletes from one city, teams from larger areas look at
the girls and say, "it's just Shelton" when they Walk out
onto the field.
"The part that feels the best is when our girls walk out
onto the field with their heads high even when they hear
'it's just Shelton'," Nesmith said. "Shelton is known as
one of the best teams so it's fun when we play a team that
doesn't know that yet."
The Shelton girls' rugby sevens team is so well-known,
in fact, that it is the only American team that has been in-
vited to a Canadian Tournament on April 21 at Shawnigan
Lake School in British Columbia.
The Shelton girls' rugby 15s first home game is set for
1 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, at Oakland Bay Junior High
against Olympia.
The boys' team is set to play at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
