Dale Fontaine
By DEAN SIEMON
Dale Fontaine holds a 3.75 grade
point average during his senior year
at Shelton High School and has cho-
sen to attend Washington State Uni-
versity in Pullman next fall.
One of the reasons he chose to at-
tend Washington State was his sis-
ter, Jade, a sophomore who is study-
ing business.
"I really liked the area and I want-
ed to spend as much time with my
sister before we start our careers and
go wherever our jobs take us," Fon-
taine said. He and his sister used to
not get along, with the typical sister
entering the room to turn the music
down and he would turn it up.
"She would tell me not to play my
guitar and I would open the door and
continue playing," Fontaine said.
But when both were in high school
together, they became closer as more
mature youths. 'We started hanging
out and having a lot of fun," he said.
As for Fontaine's major, he said
he is going to study accounting and
finance after seeing the recent job
growth in that field.
"I just like doing equations," Fon-
taine said. "I'm taking all these math
classes, might as well put them to
use."
The Shelton senior said he is also
interested in studying economics as a
second option to accounting.
"I think it's just the constant
change over the years that has inter-
ested me," Fontaine said. "And I feel
economics, with any country, needs a
better solution. It's never-ending."
Outside of the classroom, Fontaine
was a leader on the football field for
Shelton, playing all three years and
earning All-Narrows League honors.
In his sophomore year, Fontaine
was given an honorable mention. As
a junior, he made the le,tgue's second
team and the first team in his senior
season.
Fontaine said he spoke with some
colleges about playing football after
high school but said nothing worked
out.
"It was my life for a long time,"
Fontaine said. "I might try to walk
on either this year or next year."
When Fontaine isn't on the foot-
ball field or in the classroom, he has
been singing in rock bands for the
last five years since the eighth grade.
In August 2010, Fontaine formed
a band called Paper Pilots with some
of his friends and began playing the
guitar around that time.
Fontaine described his band as
post-hardcore, with influences from
bands such as Underoath and A Day
to Remember.
"Last year, we were playing really
heavy stuff," Fontaine said. "We still
have some of that heavy stuff, but it's
in the background."
While he is unsure about the
band's future with him going to
Washington State, he is still inter-
ested in playing in a band.
"I'd like to start something in Pull-
man," he said.
