Geyer tak
over talented Bulldogs team
By DEAN SIEMON
Just like most North Ma-
son High School athletics
this year, the baseball team
has a new head coach in Bill
Geyer, who has spent re-
cent years in the school dis-
trict's junior high baseball
program.
Geyer is also known by
the North Mason sports
community as the voice of
the Bulldogs at home foot-
ball and basketball games.
After more than 20 years
with head coach Jay Hult-
berg at North Mason, Geyer
said it is nice that his as-
sistant coaches and players
are on board with him.
"There are changes and
the kids like that," Geyer
said.
The new Bulldogs head
coach said the team, which
finished 11-13 last sea-
son (8-8 Olympic League),
has been hard at work not
only on baseball basics, but
working on strength and
cardio.
"We work our abs, we
work with the medicine
ball, we run, we work on our
strength and building our
muscle," Geyer said. "We go
about four hours a night."
Geyer said the recent
weather hasn't been able to
slow down North Mason.
"We've been out in the
rain, the snow, the wind
and the hail - not one com-
plaint," he said. "Not one
from any kid and we have
almost 50 kids turning out."
Geyer said the Bulldogs
are hoping to be led by se-
nior Kasey Bielec, who was
North Mason's top pitcher
and hitter.
"We're going to ride Kas-
ey's back as far as he'll take
us," Geyer said. "When you
look at Kasey, he doesn't
look like a tremendous ath-
lete. But he just works hard
and everything in there,
he's fundamentally sound."
The North Mason coach
said Bielec has been a lead-
er for the younger Bulldogs
as a three-sport athlete
(football, basketball and
baseball).
"Kasey Bielec is definite-
ly our leader," Geyer said.
"The kids respect him and
want to be him."
Bielec recently signed to
be a third-baseman at Cen-
tral Washington University
next season, but will be
utilized as a shortstop and

If you
have ever
wondered
if down-
ing a pro-
tein shake
after your workout will help
to build muscle, the short an-
swer is "yes." According to a
study involving 48 men, half
of whom were in their 20s and
the other half in their 70s, eat-
ing protein after exercise helps
put the body's muscle-building
machinery into motion. Seniors
should be heartened by the fact
that the observed increase in
muscle mass occurred at nearly
the same rate in young men as in
elderly men. It should be noted,
however, that the researchers did
not take a longer look at muscle-
mass changes in either the young
or older men. Still, the study ar-
