Owls return eight
state competitors
By DEAN SIEMON
Last season, the Mary M. Knight High School girls
track and field team won the 1B District IV champion-
ship meet while the boys team finished three points shy
of their district title.
"We've got some good returning talent," said Kitty
Brehmeyer, Mary M. Knight head coach. "I think the
group is going to be smaller than last year, but that's
okay because that way, hopefully it will allow me to
spend more time with each one and see where they are
at."
While losing a few seniors, the Owls return three
boys and five girls who competed at last year's 1B state
track and field championships in Cheney.
In the discus event, Brehmeyer said freshman Han-
nah Frost is coming off a strong season last year in
eighth grade.
"So we're looking forward to a lot of good stuff from
her this year," Brehmeyer said.
Other returning state athletes include junior Fayrene
Arrington (ninth in triple jump), sophomore Kiah Lof-
gren (seventhin 1,600 and seventh in 3,200 meters) and
sophomore Nick Dierkop (eighth in 300 meter hurdles).
Brehmeyer said it is too early to tell whether any of
last year's state competitors will make a return to the
state championships afLer spending the first week of
practice with the girls basketball team competing at the
1B state tournament in Spokane.
"So I've not seen where we're at yet," she said. "But I
know what their potential is going to be."
Junior Linda Cook returns from last season's fifth
place finish at the state shot put event and could be one
of the team leaders this year.
"Linda Cook is going to step up as far as keeping ev-
eryone working hard and mentoring the younger girls,"
Brehmeyer said.
Brehmeyer said the lone senior this year, Ashley
Culver, gained great experience from being on the state
4x400 meter relay team, which finished seventh at
state.
"Ashley is a quiet leader," Brehmeyer said. "She'll be
a lead by example type of person."
Regardless of team leaders for the track and field
program, Brehmeyer said the entire group is "very self-
motivated."
"I'm going to be able to get them on task and do as I
ask," Brehmeyer said. "It's a nice group of young men
and women."
Brehmeyer said the long-term goals for Mary M.
Knight this season is to remain focused as they continue
to improve.
"Be better tomorrow than you were yesterday and
getting from basketball shape into track and field
shape," Brehmeyer said.

North Mason High
School track and field
coaches are unsure how the
program will do after the
graduation of more than 20
athletes between the boys
and girls teams.
"I can tell you this,
we've got some kids that
are not afraid to work and
if they keep that mental-
ity throughout the season,
they're going to get better
and help the team in the
long run," said Jeff Bevers,
North Mason boys head
coach. "That's all we can
hope for."
The girls team is also re-
building with 20 athletes
arriving to the first week of
practice.
"We have the biggest
turnout that we've had in
a really long time," said
Miranda Thygesen, North
Mason girls coach. "We've
got a good group of fresh-
men girls."
Thygesen said the re-
turning athletes, including
senior Shannon Heither
(javelin), sophomore Eve-
lyn Willaims (sprints), and
seniors Renee Willey (dis-
cus, shot put) and Sadee
Ingwaldson (discus, shot
put).
"But with the reconfigu-
ration with the league, it's
hard to say," she said.
Heiter finished 12th at
the 2A state champion-
ships as the lone girls state
competitor.
Willey and Ingwaldson
both competed in the 2A
West Central Districts in
shot put, along with Wil-
liams in the 100 meter and
200 meter events.
"We haven't seen a whole
bunch of everything yet,"
Thygesen said.
