NMBGYSS©CCER Friesen, new NM er hi sets the bar for imp ment Journal photo by Dean Siemon North Mason High School's Nick Rasmussen receives a pass during Thursday's practice in Belfair. By DEAN SIEMON Matt Friesen is keeping himself busy during the offsea- son from the Kitsap Pumas Soccer Club, a team in the Unit- ed Soccer League's Premier Development League. After leading the Pumas in scoring in the 2010 season, Friesen is the new head coach for North Mason High School boys soccer. "I'm obviously in the area doing this," Friesen said, who was also an assistant coach for North Mason's girls soccer team in the fall, under teammate Dustyn Brim. The Bulldogs were 4-12 last season, finishing 4-9 in the Olympic League. "We're aiming for better than that [four wins]," Friesen said. Friesen said North Mason has been able to get going in their first week of practice with 24 Bulldogs competing for varsity roster spots. "We have 24 players so I'm not cutting anyone and I'm encouring everyone to come out, no matter their skill level," he said. The first-year North Mason head coach said the skill lev- el throughout the roster does range from very high to low. "So I'm trying to build up the bottom and have that core group of guys help them get better for next year," Friesen said. One of the core Bulldogs is junior Hunter Ralston, who Friesen said has shown he can be a leader of the team. "He [Ralston] takes control of stuff off the field and on the field, he's the centerback," Friesen said. Friesen said Hunter Ralston's brother, sophomore Colin ~'r Shelton-Mason County I| P,O. Ralston, is also in the core group of key returners along with junior Nick Rasmussen. "I don't want to single them out and put pressure on them, but they are part of that core group," Friesen said. The core group of key players also includes senior Derek Wolfe, senior Sebastian Gaspar and junior Miguel Fran- cisco. Friesen said the with this core group, the goal in the early part of the season is to "fill in the blanks." "Hopefully that bottom end at the end of the season will help make a good group of 11," Friesen said. Friesen said he has been trying to get the young Bull- dogs to get on board with his team focus - "defense, defense and defense." "Right now, I already told them that I want to stay around a goal against average," Friesen said. The Bulldogs coach said if the team can finish around a .500 record, it would be a successful improvement from last season's four wins. "They're [North Mason] working hard right now," he said.
