Page A—4 — Shelton-Mason County Journal Thursday, March 10, Random thoughts for a day in March I can’t figure out whether , I’m pro- or anti-biotic. Was it Bruce Jenner or Caitlyn Jenner who won the decathlon at the 1976 Sum- mer Olympics? You can’t really be a life- long resident of a place until you die there. Here’s a trait of some re- cently retired workers: They take the long route to rooms in their homes because it buys them some time before they have to figure out what to do next. ‘ It might be better to have ' pretension than hypertension. When did the phrase a “re- sults-oriented person” become a workplace cliche? We overhear and we over- see, but do people oversmell? Just because.you’re angry doesn’t mean you’re right. KlRK ERICSON THESE 1 TIMES Surgeons wear masks for two reasons: One, to avoid inhaling or exhaling any con— taminants while they’re oper- ating on patients,‘and two, so patients can’t identify them in court if they’re sued for malpractice. I’ve come up with my first clue for a crossword puzzle: A girl in class. Four letters. (Answer at the bottom of column.) Here are suggestions for some new crimes: First- degree shenanigans. Preme- diated h‘orseplay. Wanton mischief. We have too many pluses: Disney+, ESPN+, CNN+, Ap- pleTV+, Paramount+ and Discovery+. Some hedge fund will eventually swoop in and own all those pluses, and the new corporation will be PLUS+. Here’s a conspiracy theory ‘ I invented: The governors of Texas and Florida are unwit- ting members of the Deep State and are pawns in a covert operation against a certain former president and his supporters. Democrats indoctrinated those two GOP governors as children so they could be unleashed as adults when George Soros, Bill Gates and Anthony’Fauci finally manufactured the vi- rus that causes COVID-19. Stay with me here. Demo- crats wanted those two gov- ernors in place in twoof our three most-populous states so those governors could urge Republican voters to refuse a life-saving vaccine, thus increasing their likelihood I of dying. It’s so obvious. Ask yourself: “Who benefits from Republicans dying at a much higher rate from the coronavi- rus than Democrats?” Soros, Gates and Fauci, that’s who! Overseen at SeaTac Air- port last autumn: A woman who looked to be in her mid- 30s is standing in line at a Dilletante Coffee stand. Blond highlights streak her tousled hair, she wears a pair of shiny new Nike shoes and yoga pants, and the strap of her fancy-schmancy shopping bag hangs from her elbow crease. She orders a big hot chocolate. A few seconds pass before she asks the barista how many scoops of chocolate that has. “Five,” the barista says. “Could you make it three scoops?” she quickly re- sponds. The barista responds: ' “Sure.” A few seconds go by. “Actually, you know what?” the woman asks. “I need that to be 2V2 scdops, OK?” A teenager was taking my breakfast order at a diner recently. He kept addressing" me as sir, even after I told him he didn’t need to call me sir so much. But he kept it up, so I started calling him sir, which made him call me sir more. Soon enough, we were both using the word “sir” multiple times in single sentences. The food was good though. ' Atheists and agnostics are more likely to drive Teslas than Ford-150s. These people who pride themselves on not be- ing sheep sure do a lot of bleating. Crossword clue answer: Lass. ' I Contact Kirk Ericson at kirk@masoncounty.com LETTERS T0 THE EDITOR I The nature of racism Editor, the Journal, v I was raised in the South by a single working mom, and much like Mr. Poir- son’s story in his letter of March 3, was influenced at an early age by the ad— V mirable personal characteristics of our caregiver/maid. It is always rewarding to read letters to the Journal that express opinions and personal views that are free from the sneers and name-calling that fuel running feuds. ' Poirson may want to have some lon- ger conversations with his experts on racial conflict because it is doubtful they accuse him that “as a Caucasian” he is “a systemic racist.”Every individual may or may not have racist views or feelings in their thoughts or opinions, but sys- temic racism refers to the societal struc- ture whose outcomes result in inequality and injustice for some groups as opposed to others. The “only cure for this malady” is far from “a frontal lobotomy,” but for some individuals out there that is certainly a tempting option! The tragic story in his letter reveals a young boy who admired . , and respected a strong woman who played an influential role in his upbring- ing. Nothing remotely racist about that, evenas Poirson admits she was the only person of color he’s known “well enough Sirltoummucmnty trauma! His letter in no way is any type of defense of that system, but indeed a great example of how expanding the diversity of those we ‘feel comfortable around” can lead to more tolerance and understanding for us all. David Ellis Union Editor’s note: “Good News” is ad- vertiser-sponsored content that’s not produced by the editorial staff of the Shelton~Mason County Journal. Thanks for good news Editor, the Journal, I commend and thank you for includ- ing the “Good News” page in the Jour- nal every week. We all surely need good news these days. Theresa does a great job sharing a verse of scripture with some personal thoughts, prayer andei- ble trivia. The young and old alike should enjoy and profit from it. The Good News is certainly a breath of encouragement to me and anyone who takes a'few mo- 'ments to read and think about it. The verse at the bottom of the page, Isaiah 40:31, is a wonderfirl promise. ' Thank you for such valuable input. I Doris Spear Shelton Thanks for the correction Editor, the Journal, Thank you. Mr. James Biehl, for notic— ing my error in both logic and nomen- clature in your response to my Journal letter to the editor published in the March edition in response to my letter of Feb. 24: concise, polite, and erudite, exposing my oversight regarding the difierence between investment and expense. You are totally correct noticing that investments — in this case real estate — are typically long-term (30 years is considered an eternity in this environment). Expenses, on the other hand, are short term — monthly, at best. , As an aside if we ever have a debate between the local Republican (conserva- tive) and Democratic (liberal) parties I would like to have you as my Democrat- ic/liberal opponent as I think we might have the ability to discuss (vs. emote) political issues - a godsend for all. In the interest of brevity in my last Front office: missive to the Journal, I ignored the criti- cal ditference between investment and expense; an investment (stocks, property, machine tools) should not be. confused with expense (food, clothing, whiskey and rent — the daily exchange of cash for product). ‘ . Regarding investors: I recall an an- ecdote regarding our neighbor Dorothy — arguably the wealthiest woman in our wealthy Community. Dorothy would pull into the local Cleveland Trust'night de- pository kiosk in her aging Dodge Dart, toss thereina wad of cash. wrapped in a rubber band enveloped with her name. It was subsequently deposited correctly, And then there’s my mother’s obser- vation that the most poorly dressed chil— dren in our town were the ones whose parents were wealthy. An early lesson: wealth is not obstreperous, appearance is . not necessarily reality, and wealth is an attittide and characteristic within you, a part of your character. Were I ever to be elected to be Grand Pooh-Bah of the United States, I would require that every expenditure proposal be classified as investment or expense: provide supportive documentation —— words or less.
