On the ground, co-owner, photographer and drone pilot, Rob Nagel captures internal and external listing photos for homes, land and other properties. Using a drone, Nagel can also create high-resolution aerial maps for applications in industries such as forestry and real estate. Photo courtesy of Arctos Aerial Arctos Aerial offers local drone imagery services By MOlly Walsh mol/y@masoncounty. com More than a scenic photo, drone photography is a previously untapped method for assessing ‘property and landscape compositions. Ascending well above tree lines and Skylines, special— ized drones can capture a detailed map, weaved together by thousands of im- ages for applications in industries such as real estate, agriculture and forestry. Rob Nagel, a certified drone pilot, photographer and Harstine Island resident, is bringing these services to Mason County through his drone pho- tography business, Arctos Aerial. After discovering a passion for na— ture and wildlife photography in high school, Nagel attended the University of Idaho, where he studied wildlife bi- ology. Through his studies and subse- quent professional experience, Nagel expanded on his interest in photogra- phy and wildlife by learning to create maps for environmental organizations. “With the science background that I have, I’ve always been doing mapping professionally for different natural re- source organizations,” said Nagel. “So, drone imagery kind of combined those two things specifically.” In 2017, Nagel’s interests in nature, mapping and photography coalesced when Nagel earned his commercial drone pilot certification, allowing him to offer drone photography services. In 2018, Nagel launched Arctos Aerial full time with his wife Kate Nagel. As Kate works on the business end, Rob provides traditional real estate pho- tography and drone-based imagery. Contracting with local real estate agents, Nagel’s real estate photogra- phy services include taking internal and external listing photos for homes, land and other properties. Using a drone, Nagel also captures overhead video and photos of the listed property. _Nagel’s drone services extend be— yond traditional photos, ' into aerial map making. To create an overhead map, Nagel uses a drone to capture high-resolution photos along a pre- determined flight path, allowing for a certain amount of. overlap between each photo. ‘ In post-processing, ,a software pro- gram can then create a high-resolu- tion map by seamlessly weaving each overlapping photo, while correcting for any distortion. Using information cap- tured from the drone, the map can act as a 3-D property model that displays the land’s elevation profiles. This 3-D effect is created using a technique called photogrammetry, where the post-processing . software picks certain points that appear in ’ more than one photo. The software takes those overlapping features and creates point clouds, from which eleva— tion and other- 3—D features can be de- termined. N age] these types of maps have sev- eral applications, including for indi- viduals 0r developers who plan to build on property, or for insurance purposes. Another prominent demographic for aerial mapping is the forest industry. An alternative to on-the-ground navi- gation or government-provided GIS imagery that is only periodically up- dated, foresters can use*drone photog- raphy to create a current aerial map to determine exact locations of where trees havegbeen cut. “One benefit of the aerial mapping with drones is the kind of on-demand- ness of it,” said N agel. “You can decide when you need the imagery and go out and get it that day. And the process- ing'is super fast. So, the next day they would have a map that they could use.” Nagel has also worked with a local shellfish company to map tidelands used for geoduck farming. Once a month for six months, Nagel covered 100 acres of tideland while at low tide, for agricultural planning purposes. As Nagel expands his aerial pho- tography services, he plans to connect with logging, agricultural, construc- tion and real estate business abodt potential industrial applications for aerial mapping, beyond a straightfor- ward photo. “I’ve contacted a few people about that specifically and they’ve referred me to their communications depart- ment because they think I’m talking about just taking photos and videos, like someone would on the ground,” said Nagel. . After more than year in business, Nagel said he enjoys all facets of Arc- tos Aerial, from real estate to drone photography, but moving forward, Nagel is enthusiastic about the fu- ture of drone photography in Mason County. .. “I think a lot of people think drone photography and they think a photo for real estate, which is easily under- stood,” said Nagel. “But the mapping component and sophisticated 8_-D mod- eling is something most people that I’ve talked to don’t even realize.”
