Working to clean up Shelton in the 19308
rant C. Angle, who
started his Mason
County Journal (later
Shelton-Mason County Jour-
nal) in 1886, never lost his
passion for making Shelton the
best it could be. From the be—
ginning, he urged locals to take
pride in their town, and he
was the instigator of a yearly By JAN

spring cleanup program. On
the front page of the March 24,
1930, edition of his newspaper,
Angle featured the following special
editorial titled,“Clean—up Time Here,”
which was printed in large type and
framed by an eye-catching border.
“After the equinox it will be time to
get busy on the clean-up program for
the year, getting rid of the accumu-
lated waste of the winter and beauti-

fying the homes and the city
in general.
“It is well now to take an
inventory of the useless stuff
cluttering up the premises,
and the offensive material
stacked in corners ripening
to breed summer flies and
disease.
“The dangers of epidemic
have increased with the
growth of Shelton and the
congestion of its homes, and
constant effort is required to maintain
health in the community and avoid
losses due to sickness.
“Cleaning up the premises, the
streets, alleys, and vacant places,
and preventing the dumping of refuse
anywhere within the city limits is the
best and cheapest insurance against

disease and doctor’s bills.
“Civic beauty is also a good invest-
ment, enhancing property values
directly, giving the owners increased
satisfaction in living, and attracting
a better class of people to settle in the
community.
“Clean-up Week is. a regular insti-
tution in every progressive city and
town, and if advance preparation is
made, it will be only a short job to do
the spring house cleaning and get it
over with for the year.
“Fortunately, Shelton is kept-fairly
clean through the year by its regular
garbage collection which makes the
daily round through the business dis-
trict and also takes care of the homes
for a small sum, and this makes the
spring clean—up a short job.”
.The following week, Angle ap—

plauded the local Methodist Church
school for its contribution to beautify-
ing the town:
“The Methodist Church school
started something good in distribut-
ing sweet pea seeds to the children
Sunday, as this promises to add much
more sweetness and beauty to local
backyards. Needless to add that a ten-
cent packet of seeds will start many
a boy and girl to flowers and a better
appreciation of nature. Incidentally,
it will force the older folks at home
to taking a greater interest in their
gardens, and be on the whole a worth-
while movement toward beautifying
. Shelton.”
