Harstine Island Community Club
schedules Inquiring Minds program
Harstine Island Commu-
nity Club, in partnership
with Humanities Washing-
ton, the Washington State
Legislature and the Na-
tional Endowment for the
Humanities, hosts its third
and final session of 2012
Inquiring Minds series at 2
p.m, on Sunday, March 26,
at the Harstine Island Com-
munity Hall.
The speaker for the
March program is Joan
Hockaday, Bainbridge Is-
land author and garden his-
torian. Hockaday will share
her interests in gardens and
natural history with a focus
on "Olmsted(s) in the Pacific
Northwest: Parks, Gardens
and Campus Design."
The Olmsted brothers,
famous on the East Coast
and beyond, traveled west
around the turn of the cen-
tury to assist with the cre-
ation of parks, campuses
and boulevards throughout
the Pacific Northwest, em-
phasizing a reflection of the
natural surroundings and
native vegetation.
There are many exam-
ples of Olmsted influence
locally, such as Bloedel
Preserve on Bainbridge Is-
land, Lakewold Gardens,
Gravely Lake in Lakewood
and Dunn Garden in Se-
attle.
Today residents see the
value of preserving native
plants and planting what
grows best in our environ-
ment, saving plant species,
maintenance time and wa-
ter.
A question Hockaday
asks is "Are we a century
too late? Or was Olmsted a
century too soon?"
Come prepared to be
challenged and fascinated.
The event is free, open to
the public and the doors
open at 1:30 p.m.
