The Mason County Youth Baseball Associa-
tion (MCYBA) season began March 5 and some
teams still need sponsors.
"Businesses should sponsor a team to sup-
port the community," MCYBA communications
director Amber Frye said.
There are four different levels of sponsorship
a business or individual can choose.
The least expensive is the copper option for
$100. Sponsors can give $350 for the bronze op-
tion, $600 for the silver option or $1,000 for the • Court~yof Bri ...... Lepe

Children play in seven age groups with the
MCYBA. Children 6 and younger play in the
Shetland division while 7- and 8-year-olds play
in the Mustang division.
Children who are 9 and 10 play in the Mus-
tang division while children 11 and 12 play in
the Bronco division:
The Pony division is for teens 13 and 14 while
the Colt division is for teens 15 and 16.
Finally, the Palomino division is for teens be-
tween 17 and 19.
There are currently 31 teams listed on the
MCYBA website.
This season, the MCYBA decided to have a
logo contest among the players in the associa-
tion to produce a unifying logo that can be used
for years to come.
"We are proud to introduce MCYBA's new
logo and even prouder that two of our local
youths were able to take credit for the de-
sign," fundraising director Brianna Lepe
said. "We had several wonderful entries and
after much debate, we chose two designs that
were so similar in concept that we made it
one design."
The new logo was designed by Shelton resi-
dent Payton Goos, 11, and Olympia resident
Bailee Breshears, 13. It uses baseball bats to
form the M and a baseball for the C to stand for
Mason County.
"We would also like to give a special thanks
to Howard Legget Art in Union for his time
spent making these two kids' designs our offi-
cial new logo," Lepe said.
March weather
Madness has begun
"arch Madness
has officially be-
gun and I'm not
talking about the NCAA
tournament, which also
began this week.
No, what I'm talk-
ing about is the wacky
weather Mason County
has experienced in the
last seven days.
Let's break this down:
on Thursday, March 8,
the weather was sunny
and warm -- at least 60
degrees if I'm remember-
ing correctly. It appeared
that spring was coming
early.
And then the weekend
came, with cold wind and
driving rain. On Satur-
day, I stood outside with
the Shelton and North
Mason baseball teams in
the rain, shivering right
alongside them. Then I
got.soaked in the down-
pour with the Shelton
boys' rugby 15s team and
its fans.
Fast forward to Mon-
day, March 12, when all
outdoor sporting events
except for soccer were can-
celed due to the downpour
of rain.
Great, I thought, know-
ing this was going to make
my sports section more
difficult.
Then I woke up to an
unpleasant surprise on
Tuesday: The ground
was covered in probably
two inches of snow. This,
of course, led to the re-
scheduled games from
Monday being scheduled
further
mR out into
the future
and sud-
denly I
was short
one arti-
cle for the
section.

HANSON only did
Tuesday
have
snow, but it also had hail,
pouring rain and momen-
tary glimpses of the sun.
March Madness, in-
deed.
I remember being a
child and singing that
old song: "Rain, rain, go
away, come again anoth-
er day." And I've got to
say, now that song's been
in my head this week,
as I keep an eye on the
window, hoping the rain
and snow will go away,
with the snow not to be
seen again until, at least,
next winter. Although, I'd
prefer if there was never
snow.
This is western Wash-
ington, though, so all
bets are off when it comes
to weather and outdoor
sports.
Keeping that in mind,
be sure to check the Shel-
ton and North Mason
websites for game cancel-
lations when the weather
gets horrible. Also, I hope
everybody will think
sunny thoughts with me so
spring will finally arrive in
Mason County and we can
all declare: "Game on."

racked up another win last weekend.

On Sunday, March 11, the Lady Savages won 52-5
over the Chuckanuts of Bellingham.
"The girls were really quick on the ball-handling," for-
wards coach Kasey Robbins said. "At the point of contact,
though, they needed to be more unified."
This was the second big season win for the Lady Savages.
The team is set play next at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March
18, at home against Budd Bay at Oakland Bay Junior
High.
"The girls are just' going to have to be very physical
while moving fast," Robbins said. "This will be a rivalry-
type game. It'll be very tight, but we can win it."
