Lieutenant Dave Eklund will serve as in- terim chief through the end of the year, at which time commissioners will conduct an evaluation, In the meantime, one of the deparment's three ser- as lieutenant. The city and Eklund also plan to conduct test- ing and evaluations to solidify any command changes. "So, there could be some more changes around the first of the yar," Eklund noted. Adage pulls out of Mason County By NATALIE JOHNSON Adage Mason LLC announced this week its intention to halt op- erations in Mason County. Adage and Port of Shelton rep- resentatives say that the decision came as a result of a poor market for biomass energy in Washington. "Adage was confident that it was well on the way in obtaining the necessary environmental and construction permits and had se- cured the necessary contracts for their fuel supply ... However, since many utilities in Washington State have or will meet the public's man- date (Initiative 1-937)for renew- able energy over the next three years, the demand for this power plant's output is simply not there," Port of Shelton Executive Director John Dobson said in an e-mail. Adage representat.ives had pre- viously stated that power would be sold to utilities in California, not Washington. However, the demand for biomass energy in California and elsewhere is not as high as Ad- age formerly expected, Adage Public Affairs Director Tom DePonty said. Adage will be walking away from a multi-million dollar invest- ment when it leaves Mason Coun- ty, DePonty said. Amid considerable public de- bate, Adage, a joint venture be- tween AREVA and Duke Energy, has been actively working for more than a year to:gain approval from state and local agencies to build a 65-megawatt biomass energy facil- ity in Mason County. Adage won several key victories before announcing its departure, including signing a lease option with the Port of Shelton for See Adage on page A-5 Employee of the Year. "I'nat's probably why he was nominated and elected." The reserve officer of the year isRobert Aud- erer. Ui!!III!I!!IUUII II More folks turn to WorkSource By ARLA SHEPHARD Job search isn't what it was two years ago. So says Terry Weber, in- terim supervisor of the Shel- ton branch of the job search center WorkSource, which has seen a spike in walk-in traffic this year. In the past two months, it hasn't been unusual to see up to 200 p.eop.le come into the Shelton branch each day, while just last December that figure was closer to 130, Weber said. Belfair Water, Theler to negotiate By ARLA SHEPHARD At this week's meeting of the Belfair Wa- ter District, Manager Dave Tipton said that the district still needed to complete negotia- tions with two customers who had been under billed for 18 months due to a software error discovered near the end of last year. "We're in negotiati0ns with two more [cus- tomers]," Tipton said, naming only the Mary E. Theler Community Center as one of the parties. "Theler Center refuses to talk about it ... We've offered them multiple opportuni- ties, and they just won't even come to the dis- cussion." Commission Chair John Phillips asked whether the district had the authority to al- low a debt collection agency to handle the Theler Center situation. "I don't think it's the right thing [to involve a debt collector]," Commissioner Mike Pope said. "It's easier to work with them than to stir up more controversy." The commissioners authorized Pope to become the point negotiator with the Theler Center. The board also voted to give three accounts a three-month leak adjustment. Belfair man pleads not guilty to assault, harassment Allegedly choked, threatened to shoot ex with a shotgun By KEVAN MOORE A Belfair man has pled not guilty to charg- es of assault in the second degree (DV) with a firearm enhancement and felony harassment. Kevin J. Davies, 20, of the 22600 block of State Route 3 was arrested at his residence at 8:30 p.m. on February 5. Mason County Superior Court Judge Amber Finlay found probable cause for the charges and set bail at $40,000 on February 7. Davies pled not guilty to the charges during his Tues- day, Feb. 14, arraignment. A bail hearing, meanwhile, has been slated for March 21. At 7:27 p.m. on the night in question, dis- patchers advised depties of a domestic distur- bance at the Belfair residence. The alleged victim in the case, Andrea M. Millis, 20, said Davies, her ex-boyfriend, knocked her out and then held a shotgun to her head. A deputy's report said that Millis was shak- ing, crying and had bloodshot eyes when they arrived. Deputies also noted purple and red marks on Millis' neck. Millis told police that she went to Davies' See Assault on page A-7
