MASTERGARDENERS By R. JEANNE REHWALDT, PROGRAM COORDINATOR My forsythia plant is finally be- ginning to put out yellow blooms, and my bulbs are peaking their heads up through the ground. Spring is approaching and it is time to get out into our gardens (between rain storms) and get the beds ready for early planting. You can plant peas, lettuce, cabbage, onions and kale anytime now if weather permits for a delicious harvest in a few months. Sow at two-week intervals to harvest throughout the season rather than all at once. Question: My houseplants seem to be growing too large for their pots. When is a good time to repot them? Answer: Now is an excellent time to repot, groom, and feed your house- plants. Be sure to provide drainage in the bottom of the pot and provide sufficient humidity for the plants to thrive. You can do this by filling a saucer with pebbles, placing your plant pot on the pebbles and then pouring water into the saucer each time you water your plants. Question: I received a shamrock plant as a prize at a St. Patrick's Day party. How do I keep it alive? Answer: Shamrocks like cool air, moist soil (except in their dormant period), and bright light. They do not have an extensive root system, so unlike many plants, actually prefer to be crowded in a pot. However, if the plant dries out too quickly, you may need to move it into a larger pot. Fertilize every three weeks while the plant is actively growing or flower- ing using regular houseplant fertil- izer. When the plant only produces a few leaves, it indicates it is going dormant. Be aware that no matter how much care you give this plant, at times it will look sick and lose its leaves. This dormant period, which occurs two to three times a year, is part of the growing process common to all plants grown from bulbs. Dur- ing dormancy, stop watering. Let the leaves die back naturally, then remove dead, brown leaves. Place the plant in a cool, dark place • while it goes through its dormancy period, don't allow the plant to get too dry, but not over moist either. Plants generally remain dormant for about three months. New green shoots signal that the plant is waking up and needs to be moved back into the light. (Thank you to Donald D. Tap- io, Extension Horticulture Agent, Grays Harbor County, for this infor- mation.) The Mason County WSU Master Gardeners would like to take this opportunity to thank the mem- bers of Kristmastown Kiwanis for moving our shed from the old fair- grounds site to our new garden at Catalyst Park. You accomplished in a few hours something that we thought would never happen. We will now be able to store tools to use in the garden. This will relieve the volunteers from hauling wheelbar- rows and shovels from home. Thank you so much. Donations needed to suppo local Boy and u ub Sco ts On April 9, 2011, The Sons of the American Legion will be holding a spring dinner and auction at the 40 et 8 Club lo- cated at 113 W. Cota Street. All proceeds from this event go directly to support local Boy and Cub Scout activities, with a special emphasis on the policy that no boys are left out. We are currently soliciting donations for goods or services that may be auctioned that evening. If you are interested in donating, one of our youth members would be happy to come by and pick up the item, or you may call one of our represen- tatives to set up further arrangements. A chicken fried steak dinner, including mashed potatoes, vegetable, dinner roll and dessert, will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. with the auction beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are $12.
