Shelton-Mason County Journal Season Ol 00ners postponed due to weather By DEAN SIEMON Rain, rain, go away. A number of season opening games were forced to reschedule due to the week of wet weather. On Monday, North Mason High School baseball and fastpitch teams had to post- pone their games at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor. Fastpitch head coach Molleigh Fusare told the Journal that the game has been rescheduled for today at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs baseball team rescheduled their game against the Seahawks for Sat- urday at noon and the game is now moved to Belfair. Shelton High School baseball's home opener against Yelm High School was also postponed for a date to be announced on Monday. The weather almost forced a schedule change for Shelton High School boys soc- cer season opener on Monday at Bremer- ton High School with reports that the field was under water. But the game was played as scheduled. The Shelton High School fastpitch soft- ball team's opener at Bremerton High School was scheduled to Wednesday, March 16 (after the Journal's press dead- line). North Mason baseball's home opener against Lakes High School has also been rained out on Tuesday and rescheduled for Wednesday (after the Journal press dead- line). Corner kick gives Highclimbers season opening in Bremerton By DEAN SIEMON In a game that was almost canceled due to field condi- tions, the 4A Shelton High School boys soccer team tied with 3A Bremerton High School on a corner kick goal on Monday in Bremerton, 2-2. Trailing 2-1 in the sec- ond half, senior Alex Nunez scored in the 53rd minute from a corner kick right of the Bremerton goalkeeper, get- ting the ball on the opposite side. Shelton head coach Maceli- no Dumpit said Nunez's goal was "brilliant." "[Nunez] noticed that the goalie was off his line and he noticed that the defense wasn't paying attention and he took full advantage of it," Dumpit said. The Highclimbers (0-0-1) struggled in the first half, be- ing outshot 4-1 in the first 25 minutes. Bremerton (0-0-1) scored in the 15th minute from a Nick Riders assist to Matt Sawyer, followed by a Douglas Erick- son goal in the 20th minute. "We put ourselves in a dif- ficult situation," the first year Shelton head coach said. Shelton was able to score a goal on their lone first half corner kick, granted it bounced in off a Knights play- er after a strike from senior Michael Millard. In the second half, Shel- ton's offense controlled the game, outshooting the Knights 3-2 and creating five corner kicks - one of which came from the Nunez goal. "I think it's great that we "It's too bad [Bremerton] got those two early goals because we should have won this game," came back and built team morale - to know that we can come back and do that is something," Dumpit said. Dumpit said he felt the Highclimbers played better soccer than Bremerton over- all with better possession time. "It's too bad [Bremerton] got those two early goals be- cause we should have won this game," he said. "We didn't outshoot them but we played better soccer than them." The two lone second half shots from the Knights came from Sawyer- both wide right. After miscommunication between goalie junior Cody Wilkes and a Shelton defen- seman, Sawyer ended up with the ball and an empty net, but See Shelton on page C-6 Journal photo by Dean Siemon Shelton High School's Austin Schirato fights for possession of the ball with Bremerton High School's James Hill during a nonleague game on Monday in Bremerton in the season opener for both teams. "That's what preseason is for - figur- ing out what changes to make and getting people into position," Friesen said. The Bulldogs (0-1) fell behind early af- ter Bonney Lake (1-0) sophomore Nick Alexander scored in the fourth minute off a deflected save from North Mason junior Joel Ferguson. Ferguson also allowed a goal in the sec- ond half off a deflected save, which was capitilized by Alexander again in the 63rd minute. "We're going to talk to him about if he can't hold onto the ball, get it out wide be- cause that's a danger area," Friesen said. "But [Alexander] was in the right place at the right time." The Panthers also scored in the seventh minute (Cameron Goenner) and in the ninth minute (Brody Fitzsimmons) for a 3-0 lead. Bonney Lake's Tyler Free scored in the 25th minute and Jacob Curtis in the 37th minute gave the Panthers the 5-0 halftime lead. Bonney Lake finished last season 0-2 in the 3A West Central Districts after a 10-3- 2 regular season record and third place in the 3A South Puget Sound League. Friesen said he wasn't able to say whether the game against the Panthers gave a good measure of the Bulldogs abil- ity and expects Bonney Lake to win the 3A SPSL title. "It's hard to say where we'll place in our league [1A/2A/3A Olympic League], but I got to see what a lot of people could do," he said. "They've got 13, 14 seniors and we've got three. So when you're talking about experience, they have a lot of it and they showed it." The Bulldogs allowed 14 shots on goal, but held the Panthers to eight shots in the second half. Friesen said he made the second half adjustment of moving junior Nick Rasmus- sen to the middle defense, next to Hunter Ralston, an adjustment he may keep the See Bulldogs on page C-4 Thursday, March 17, 2011 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Page C-1
