Highclimbers' track returns five
WIAA state athletes for 2011 season
By DEAN SIEMON
Shelton High School
track and field brings back
five athletes from last sea-
son's 4A WIAA Track and
Field championships.
This year, head coach
Doug Sells said he has nev-
er been more excited with
the program's turnout of 80
athletes.
"We have a talented
bunch of kids this year with
a lot of newcomers," Sells
said. "We have a dedicat-
ed coaching staff that will
make this year even better."
Senior Ryan Adams is
ranked third in Shelton's
all-time personal best times
in the 100 meters (11.16 sec-
onds) and 200 meters (22.51
seconds).
Adams finished fifth in
the 100 meters at last sea-
son's state championships.
"He has a very good
chance of breaking the long-
standing school record in
the 100 [meters]," Sells said.
The all-time record at
Shelton for boys 100 meters
is 11 seconds by Scott Craig
in 1985.
Sells said Adams, who
ran the anchor leg on the
Highclimbers' 4x400 me-
ter relay with a split time
of 49.1 seconds, could run
in the 400 meter dash this
season.
The Shelton coach said
Adams could be within
reach of the record set by
Alex McClary in 2004 (49.16
seconds) - McClary contin-
ued to run the Universities
of California and Arkansas.
"That time (49.1 seconds)
indicates that, should [Ad-
ams] choose to contest the
400 meter dash, he could be
one of the state's very best,"
Sells said.
The top girls state athlete
is senior Brenna'Thompson,
who ran in the girls 400 me-
ters and finished third and
the top returning placer.
Sells said while there is
a couple runners with supe-
rior times entering the sea-
son, Thompson has a proven
"superior competitive abil-
ity" that should level the
field.
"Our excellent school
record in the 400 meter
dash [56.17 seconds by Ra-
chel Kaercher, 2004] may
be within Brenna's reach,"
Sells said.
Senior Jon Ownby re-
turns in the javelin throw.
He competed at last sea-
son's state meet, but missed
finishing in the top eight.
Sells said that Ownby be-
gan to struggle at the end,
with throwing mechanics
playing a role in the prob-
lem.
But Sells said Ownby at-
tended a throwers' camp
earlier this month with
Duncan Atwood, a two-time
Olympian in the javelin
throw.
"I expect Jon's technical
problems to be solved this
year, giving him an excel-
lent chance to retun to the
state championship meet,"
Sells said.
Senior Tre Fisher was
one of Shelton's top high
jumpers in addition to be-
ing one of Shelton's return-
ing sprinters. He competed
at state last season and has
set a goal of six-foot-four for
the season.
"Tre is a fine athlete and
is certainly capable of jump-
ing six-foot-four," Sells said.
"Should he do so, he will
qualify for the state champi-
onship meet."
Shelton also gained a
state caliber athlete with
the transfer of senior Annie
Fitchett, who was a student
at Principia High School
in Missouri the last three
years.
Fitchett cleared nine and
a half feet in the pole .vault
last season. Sells said she
has the potential to earn a
state medal.
"Should she jump 10 feet
or better this season, she
will more than likely be
the best girl vaulter in the
4A Narrows League," Sells
said.
Non-state athletes that
are key returners include
junior Cody Tarver (shot
put), junior Bryton Rodgers
(pole vault), junior Indi En-
dicott (hurdles), junior Ro-
man Hurst (triple jump) and
senior Alaura Jones (discus,
shot put).
Returning Shelton golfers aim for winning season
By DEAN SIEMON
Shelton High School's
girls golf team finished
the 2010 season with a 4-5
match play record in the 4A
Narrows League.
This season, head coach
Lorna Martinson is hopeful
for the Lady Highclimbers
to finish in the top half of
the league standings.
"I think if we can fin-
ish with a winning record,
that'll be a good season,"
Martinson said.
Shelton returns three
golfers from last season,
including senior Jessica
Lanman, who Martinson
said is excited to be a team
leader.
"[Lanman] wants to be
the team leader and she
wants to create an iden-
tity for us and she works
so hard," Martinson said.
"I think she's going to be a
great leader."
Martinson also noted
that Lanman has also
brought her optimistic
view in addition to her im-
proved swing mechanics.
"She has such a positive
attitude that it's conta-
gious," Martinson said.
The Shelton coach also
noted two returning ju-
niors in Caitlyn Ernst and
Lindsey Norton.
Martinson said the goals
for Ernst this season, who
the coach said had "a lot
of natural ability," is her
swing control.
"[Ernst] hits it a long
ways but it might go
straight, it might go left or
it might go right," she said.
Martinson said that Nor-
ton returns more athletic
than last season, especially
in her swing.
"Just the athleticism of
her golf swing is remark-
able," Martinson said. "She
took aerobics last year and
those skills transferred to
golf."
The other three Shelton
THE
girls golfers are newcomers
to the program, including
Audra Cation, who lives
with her family near the
Alderbrook Golf and Yacht
Club in Union.
"[Cation] comes from a
golfing family but she nev-
er played before," the Shel-
ton coach said. "She has the
resources to really work on
her game and improve."
