the kick hit the right side of
the net.
Minutes later, Sawyer
had a chance to give his
team the late lead with a
breakaway attempt, but hit
the right side bar of the net.
"We bunkered down for
the last half," Dumpit sid.
"This is the preseason game
and now we get to see where
our mistakes are."
With the upcoming
schedule including 4A Nar-
rows League games against
the top three teams last sea-
son (Bellarmine Prepara-
tory School, Stadium High
School and Gig Harbor High
School), Dumpit said Shel-
ton is more prepared mo-
rale-wise for the early test.
"I don't know if technical-
ly we are, but we get to play
them twice though," Dumpit
said.
While Dumpit said Eliud
Mendoza, Steven Guijosa
and Josh Zagrean were key
contributors from the bench,
he said Mario Luengo was
the player of the game from
the bench.
"[Luengo] was coming
off the bench and he was a
great boost of the energy,"
Dumpit said. "He just wants
to play and just loves the
game."
One of the adjustments
the Shelton coach wants the
Highclimbers to make is to
"toughen up" and be more
physical.
"We're not the biggest
team around so we have to
keep the ball," Dumpit said.

Young Climbers set
goal as top-tier team
in 4A Narrows League
By DEAN SIEMON
Last season's Shelton High School
boys golf team finished with a 4-6 over-
all record in addition to winning the
team title at the Duke Streeter Invita-
tional as a young team.
"We're still a young team," said head
coach Mark Jensen. "We have one se-
nior and the rest are sophomores and
freshmen."
Jensen said the lone senior, Riley
Lewis, doesn't have a lot of pressure on
his shoulders entering the season.
"I think he's got some but the nice
thing is a lot of those sophomores had
experience last year," Jensen said. "Its
not like he's the oy returning golfer."
Jensen said the three top return-
ing Highclimbers are sophomores Zach
Lund, Alec Martinson and Colton Gott.
"I think depth wise, we potentially
have the best team we've had in awhile,"
Jensen said.
Lund and Martinson both qualified
for the second day of the 4A Narrows
League championships, which includes
the top-40 in the league. Both finished
in the middle of the pack.
With the two league golfers plus a
skilled sophomore in Gott, Jensen said
there is the potential for up to four golf-
ers to shoot in the 70-range (in 18'holes).
"The potential to have four kids shoot
in the 70s would be as good as we've
been as far as I can remember," he said.
Jensen also noted the Highclimbers
have a few talented freshmen, including
Grant Cation.
"He's shown a lot of potential," Jen-
sen said. "He lives out at Alderbrook
[Yacht and Golf Club in Union] and
plays a lot."
With quality teams such as Bellar-
mine Preparatory School, Gig Harbor
High School, South Kitsap High School
and Central Kitsap High School, Jensen
is aiming for the team to finish in the
top three of the Narrows League.
"We'll have to play to our potential to
be able to do that," Jensen said.

Nationals in Portland on Saturday and Sunday.
SHS cheerleaders earn national title
By DEAN SIEMON
After taking fourth place at the 4A
WIAA State Championship, the Shelton
High School cheerleading squad conclud-
ed their season at Open Nationals at the
Oregon Convention Center in Portland,
Ore. on March 12 and 13.
The eventwas sanctioned by both the
United States All Star Federation and
the Oregon School Activities Association.
"They had an awesome season," said
head coach Misty Pagel.
The Highclimber cheerleaders took
first in the varsity experienced division
with a two-day total score of 235.5 points.
One Climber cheerleader, Timmi
Goodburn, suffered a dislocated elbow
during a stunt in the routine.
"Her team went back out and finished
their routine in honor of her," Pagel said.
After a trip to the emergency room at
Legacy Emmanuel Hospital in Portland,
Goodburn returned to support her all-
star cheer team, Lucky Elite, win fifth in
their division.
"She's a trooper," Pagel said.
