i: ..... 4 Face-lifting with screen of western wood perks up new or old house, adding contemporary look, privacy, shade. Posts of 4x4- inch Douglas fir or western cedar set in concrete, 2x6-inch stringers support 2x4 screening. Beams are paired 2x8s. Even a new house can bene- fit from a face-lifting, especial- ly if it's one of a long row of un- distinguished houses stretching down a street. Handsome wood screens lend a contemporary look to old or new houses, often with a bonus of privacy and shade for window and entryway. A distinctive screen that will do all this can be built by the homeowner, requiring only a saw, hammer, wrench, level and square, plus standard dimen- sion western wood, bolts and nails. Design of the screen will vary, according to location of the lront door and sidewalk, and if there is a driveway. Help For Facade A screen added to a recently completed development house, because the facade was austere and front windows were out of proportion to each other, is a good example. Supporting posts of 4x4-inch preservative-treated Douglas lit were set in concrete footings. spaced e',erv six or eight feet across the front of the house. Pine, cedar or other western woods can be used also. Beams of paired 2xgs extend lrom posts to a plate attached to the house. It set close 'to the house, only vertical screens of 2x4s are used, attached to 2x6- inch stringers along the top and bottom of the posts. Deck For Sitting If the posts are set farther out from the house, sun screens of spaced 2x2s are added across the beams. A wide wood walk- way that also serves as a sitting deck can be laid the length of the screen. The screen can tie in with a carport at the side of the house, allowing the garage to be re- modeled into an extra bed- room or family room. Before beginning construc- tion of screens attached to the house, check with building of- ficials on code requirements. For finishes, leaving the wood to weather naturally or using a light penetrating stain will en- hance the contemporary look. Molding Tricks Use of wood moldings to dec- orate walls, dividers, entryways, fireplaces, other areas is shown in eight-page color booklet avail- able for 25 cents in coin from Western Wood Products Assn., Dept. Attics Hold Unused For Creating A bounty of space for living expansion sits unused in the attics of many houses. It inay have been planned for future finishing when the house was built, but in most cases the space has just been ignored over the years. Leaving an attic or other part of the house unfinished makes it possible for couples to afford a house now that they can "expand" later, as the family grows and the budget allows. Whether planned in advance. or discovered later, an attic offers space for a bedroom, den, sewing room or a com- bination of uses. Lifting one side of the roof and adding a shed dormer will give needed head space to widen the room. Bunks Along Wall For a new room accom- modating two youngsters in a minimum of space, bunk beds can be built along the gable end wall. Shelves and drawers may fit next to the bunks or can be built into a knee wall on the sloped side. Study desks and more drawers fit under windows, in the dormer. For a sewing room, this area provides a large work table• The sewing ma- chine folds into a table that rolls away under the work bench. Framing Key to Job The framing, usually of 2x4- inch fir or pine, is the key to the finished appearance of the pro- ject. If the framing is level and plumb, wall and ceiling ma- terial goes on easier and gives the best appearance. Installing ceiling and floor covering adds another layer of insulating material in the attic, important for energy and money saving reasons. Wood- framed windows with in- sulating, glass also are benefi- cial. When remodelings are too complicated for the do-it- vourselfer, information about iirms or individuals in the area usually is available from lumber dealers.
