If you are looking for
ways to expand your pres-
ent living quarters, it's a
safe bet that you have up
to 20 per cent or more of
your home devoted to stor-
ing garden tools, bicycles
and the like, reports the
National Better Heating-
Cooling Council.
Most people use their ga-
rages for storage and park
their cars in the driveway.
If you do, don't you think
it will be better to use the
space as a playroom, den
or bedroom, and build a
small shed to house the
garden tools, etc.?
Converting an attached
garage to living space is
probably the simplest and
least expensive way to add
room to your house. Since
the foundation, footings
and exterior framing are
already in place, all that
playroomS.•
needs to be done is to re-
place the garage door with
a window, add lighting,
interior walls, floor tile
and heat.
If the house is equipped
with hydronics ~modern
hot water heating), con-
necting it to an attached
garage is a cinch.
Because hydronic sys-
tems use finger-size tub-
ing, the installer only has
to drill a small hole in the
wall next to the garage to
make the connection.
No walls to tear down or
floors to break open. The
mess is kept under con-
trol.
Best of all you can use
hydronic baseboard which
assures optimum comfort,
and at the same time
blends in with your room's
decor.
THE NEED FOR ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS is one
lhing that nearly all home improventent projecls have in
common. There's nothing so disappointing as a new counter
top that has been measured and made a fraction short, or a
shelf that needs an eighth of an inch shaved off to make il
fit. So measure with care and with accurate tools.
WHAT ONCE WAS A HUGE, OLD-FASHIONED KITCHEN was remodelled by a pro-
fessional designer to improve use of space, especially of storage space. Ceiling height
is diminished by installation of beams and bright yellow/white walleovering. Large
refrigerator/freezer has easy access.

many homemakers ease the
common complaint of too-little
storage and counter space.
The island work area also can
cure a kitchen runaround by re-
placing a large, low table that's
too crowded with chairs to be of
much comfortable use while
cooking.

to walls around the cabinets.
Creating a kitchen island is a
good way to hold costs down on
remodeling, by avoiding struc-
tural changes such as removing
walls and relocating plumbing.
Start With Shelves
Another easy and inexpen-
sive way to add storage to a
kitchen, on an unused wall, is to
hang rows of wood shelves on
adjustable brackets. Western
pine lx8s or lxl0s are suitable
for this use.
The shelves can be enclosed
later in cabinets framed with
2x2-inch lumber and covered
with I x4 or I x6-inch paneling.
In kitchen areas subject to fre-
quent splashing, wood paneling

Otherwise, the wood can be
left unfinished for full enjoy-
ment of its natural color and
grain texture.
