Page T CAR Cost vs. £EA$1NG Many members have made inquiries concerning the advisability of leasing an automobile instead of buying. Generally, we would refer that member to his accountant. That may sound outlandish, but the fact is, in general, if leasing will pay for itself, then you probably DO have an accountant who is in a position to make recommendations based on your individual cash picture and tax situation. If you are able to determine that leasing is at least a break-even proposition for you, your next step would be to find a lease that allows you the most flexibility. For instance, who bears the cost of major repairs? Can you terminate the lease without substantial penalties? Can you drive the car as much as you need without prohibitive cost? What, in fact, IS the cost compared to purchase? 6481 The cost of leasing partially depends on whether you sign an open- or closed-end contract. With the straight or closed-end lease, you pay a fixed monthly rate. Included is an amount for depreciation and your estimated mileage. You gain no equity in the car; at the end of the contract, you turn it into the lessor and the deal is ended. The lessor is responsible for the depreciation. With an open-end contract, YOU are responsible for depreciation. If at the end of the contract the depreciated value is $1,800 and the car's average book value is $1,500, then you owe the leasing company $300. If the car's average book value is $1,900, however, you should get a $100 credit, assuming the contract allows for this. For a rather hefty price, you can sign a full-maintenance contract and turn all your servicing problems over to the lessor. One contract, reviewed by the staff of "Everybody's Money" stated that if the lessor couldn't attend to the car and if the cost of servicing it elsewhere would be more than $15, you'd have to get permission before the car could be serviced. Contracts generally allow for a certain amount of wear and tear, so ask the lessor for a specific definition before you sign the lease. No doubt you'll have to pay for any wear and tear that is considered excessive by the lessor. Dents and scratches, for example, are usually charged the lessee. Another charge that you may be stuck with - even with a closed-end lease - is excessive mileage. Contracts allow for a certain number of miles, generally 20,000 a year. If you drive more than that, you are charged one to three cents per mile. Again, define this charge before signing the contract. In spite of these requirements, convenience is what makes leasing attractive and a luxury that many car owners welcome. It's just a question of how much you're willing - or can afford - to pay for convenience, particularly when you can borrow to purchase new autos at rates as low as 9%, and late model used autos as low as 10.8%. ASK SOMEONE WHO KNOWS Stan came to the credit union in the fall of 1974 as Supervisor of the Loan Department. He was, however, not new to the world of credit unions. Prior to coming to Shelton, Stan served as Real Estate Manager and Loan Officer for the Weyerhaeuser Credit Union for 3-1/'2- years. He has additional experience as supervisor in charge of sales for fifteen states and Canada for the New Products Division of the Weyerhaeuser Company. Stan and his wife, Ev, have raised three children, and now enjoy frequent visits with their six grandchildren. Stan is an avid bowler and skindiver, and among the spectator sports lists football as his favorite. Everyone at the credit union would agree that Stan has a special talent for cooking, as he treats the stall often to his special chili... STAN IS SERVING YOU FOR A BETTER CREDIT UNION she's the youngest winner yet in the credit union bank bag contest Windy does her saving at the credit union, with the help of her folks, Chuck and Lawrie Vanderwal. Windy's grandmother, Heddy Godwin, opened Windy's account shortly after her birth on December 15, 1974. Since that time, Windy's been saving the credit union bank bag way; her bank bag number was drawn as the winner on February 28th by Dot Bunnell, head teller. Windy's winnings were $1.95, the exact amount her bank bag held in coins... Windy is the third winner in this exciting savings contest for young folks. The first winner was Erik Dishon in December, winning $8.75. The second winner was Andrea Brown, winning a big $10.00. Remember: the credit union matches the COIN CONTENT of tile winning bank bag each month. Join in the fun and see that all your kids have one.
