By NATALIE JOHNSON The Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association held their seventh annual beach cleanup in the south Puget Sound last Thurs- day, gathering more than 80 cubic yards of beach debris and garbage. From 7 a.m. to noon, 127 peo- ple from 14 Shellfish farms, three tribes, the Department of Natural Resources, the Surf Riders Founda- tion, the Capital Land Trust came together to pick up garbage and de- bris from Oakland Bay to Key Pen- insula, Filucy Bay, Harstine Island on Peale Passage, Stretch Island, Anderson Island and the northest area of Budd Inlet. The total area covered was 160 miles, three times the area covered when the cleanup first started sev- en years ago. "By picking up everything out there we're providing a public service," said Bill Dewey, public policy and communications direc- tor for Taylor Shellfish. "Fhere are other organizations that dobeach cleaups but this is just something that the shellfish industry does to give back." Overall, the cleanup gathered 84 cubic yards of debris, which equates to eight and a half dump trucks full of debris. This included styrofoam, tires, and some debris associated with aquaculture, Dew- ey says. "That type of debris is not really a concern for shellfish, it's more of an eyesore," he said. "Some of it can pose a problem to other marine lifeo" In total, the Pacific Coast Sheifish Growers beach cleanup has gathered 80.5 dump trucks full of beach debris in six years, Dewey says. Dewey said that dedicated shell- fish growers and other volunteers are making a big difference in cleanup efforts like this one. "Linda Lentz at Chelsea Farms and her daughter deserve a lot of the credit for getting us out there every year," he said. ~_n the South Sound in particular I think it's made a huge impact." ...... , ....
