Season
starts with
victory at
Timberline
By DEAN SIEMON
After a slow start with some
mental mistakes, the Shelton
High School fastpitch softball
team finished strong in a 9-5
at Timberline High School on
Friday.
The Highclimbere (1-0) fi-
nally began the 2011 season
after the weather caused hav-
oc on spring sports throughout
western Washington.
"All week you want to play
games and the weather says
no and the kids are going nuts
because we were stuck inside,"
said Shelton head coach Kim
Goldsby.
Timberline (0-1) scored two
runs in each of the second and
third innings, including a two-
run home run from Gatalina
Schuster in the second.
After some early nerves
from Shelton's pitcher Madi-
son Gaa, who allowed six
walks, the senior finished the
game with nine strikeouts in
the complete seven innings.
"[Gaa] actually buckled
down,~ Goldsby said. "Two
of the last three [strikeouts]
were lookings."
Gaa was a contributor at
the plate as well, hitting a bas-
es clearing triple down the left
field line in the fourth inning,
which brought the score to 5-3
Timberline.
The Lady Highclimbers
would score three runs in the
sixth and seventh innnings to
clinch the win.
Goldsby said Shelton ex-
ecuted key plays on offense
during the second half of the
game, earning stolen bases
and causing fielder's choices.
"We played very aggres-
sive," Goldsby said. =They nev-
er let down."
Senior Miranda Graden
went one for three, including
one RBI and two stolen bases.
Sophomore Amy Morris went
two for four in the game as
well.
Junior Jordanne Krumpols,
who was one for three at the
plate, made a key play at
catcher when a wild pitch in
the second inning went to the
backstop.
When Knmlpols went to re-
cover the loose ball, she real-
ized a Timberline baserunner
was coming from third and
made a sliding dive on her
knees to block home plate and
tagged the Blazer to end the
inning.
"It was really an awesome
play," Goldsby said.
The second year Shelton
coach said there were mental
mistakes made early, includ-
ing miscommunication be-
tween infielders which led to
the two errors.
While there are some se-
niors on Shelton's roster, some
did not play at the varsity lev-
el much last season - Graden
played mostly at the junior
varsity level while senior Jack-
ie Gable missed the later part
of the season due to injury.
"We have a lot of young
stars playing," Goldsby said.
"I think they're trying to feel
each other out and see what
kind of team we're going to be."

Shelton High School's BradBearden threw 119 pitches, six strikeouts in a complete game
on Satruday to give Shelton the 7-2 win over Bellarmine Preparatory School.
After a loss at Bellarm-
ine Preparatory School on
March 16, the Shelton High
School baseball team won
the home half of the series
on Saturday, 7-2.
The Highclimbers (1-2,
1-1 4A Narrows League)
were led by pitcher Brad
Bearden, who threw a com-
plete game with six strike-
outs and five walks, throw-
ing 119 pitches.
Bearden said while his
arm wasn't tired, his back
was feeling some effects
near the end of the game.
"I was just trying to con-
serve energy during the fifth
and sixth," Bearden said.
Bearden had the ability
to learn from the March 16
loss to the Tigers (1-2, 1-1
4A Narrows League) while
he played at right field.
"I learned that they could
hit the outside pitch very
well,~ Bearden said. "I tried
to keep it down and away
from them and off the plate
as much as possible."
Bearden also went one for
three at the plate with an
RBI single ....
The Highclimbers offense
was led by right fielder
James Dickson, who had
two hits and three RBIs
from a single and a double.
Aaron Roaf, Joe Strand
and David Gorman each
contributed an RBI for Shel-
ton.
Bearden said the offense
helped him as he continued
towards a complete game.
"I could mess up and it
would not hurt the team too
much," Bearden said.

Highclimbers warm up
for upcoming season
By DEAN SIEMON
• The Shelton High School track and field team heldi an inter-
class meet at Highclimber Stadium on Thursday.
While it was a preseason warm up for many experiemced varsi-
ty athletes, it was the first competition for many newcomlers to the
Shelton program, allowing all athletes to choose their o,wn events.
"We run the meet just as we would an official leaguLe competi-
tion,~ said Shelton head coach Doug Sells. "It gives us, ~as coaches,
an idea of what they like and don't like to do."
One of the returning state competitors, senior Brenma Thomp-
son, won the girls 400-meters with a time of 1:03.92.
But Soils said Thompson will "more than likelf' begin to run
her best around June 4 at the state meet.

North Mason head coach Mol=
leigh Fusare said the team has
a different dynamic from their

:paint corners and Tristan is
more of a velocity pitcher," Fu-
sate said.
