TRACK Lady Owls take fifth t Raymond By DEAN SIEMON Mary M. Knight High School girls track and field finished fifth out of eight teams at a Pa- cific League meet at Raymond High School in Raymond on Thursday. The Lady Owls combined for 44 team points while having only four athletes -junior Linda Cook, sophomores Kiah Lefgren and Kelsey Beebe and freshman Hannah Frost. "Only with the four girls, they did very well," said Mary M. Knight head coach Kitty Breh- meyer. Cook won the shot put with a distance of 30 feet and five inches, followed Ocosta High School's Becky Shurtz's 28 feet and 10 inches. Cook's throw was better than her best at last season's 1B WIAA state championships, throwing 30 feet and two and a half inches. "She's already stronger than when she was last year," Breh- meyer said. Cook also finished fourth in discus with a throw of 73 feet and eighth in the javelin throw with 58 and a half feet. Frost had two top three fin- ishes in the meet, highlighted by a first place finish in the 800 meter race in 2:56.48, defeating Wishkah Valley High School's Aaryn Marbut by less than one second. Frost also finished third in the discus with 75 feet and sev- en inches and fourth in the shot put with 28 feet and one inch. "She's a freshman and I'm go- ing to move her around a little bit," Brehmeyer said. "I want her to experience what high school track and field is all about." Sophonlore Kelsey Beebe~also impressed Brehmeyer for her first high school track and field meet. While Beebe competed in the 200 meters (finished ninth, 35.62 seconds) and the shot put (finished llth, 21 feet and seven inches), the sophomore finished f-L~h in the discus throw with 75 feet and seven inches. "It was the first time she ever threw javelin and she did a good job," Brehmeyer said. Lofgren took sixth in the 200 meter race with a time of 33.5 seconds in addition to a sixth place finish in long jump (12 feet, one and a quarter inches) and seventh place finish in the triple jump (23 feet, seven and a quarter inches). All four Lady Owls took third in the 4x200 meter relay race with a time of 2:17.8. "All the way around, I was pleased with all the girls," Bre- hemeyer said. "Early indications for the season are we're getting ready to go and keep working hard to get to where we need to go." The Owls' boys track and field team were unable to compete at Raymond with out the minimum required number of practices be- fore entering competition. Brehemeyer said while the boys have been fighting illness- es, among other things, the boys will be ready for today's meet at North Beach High School in Ocean Shores. "They better be," Brehmeyer joked. "They should be able to go." Journal photos by Dean Siernon Shelton High School's Brenna Thompson in the girls 400-meter race during Thursday's interclass meet.
