Mason, Shelton FALLACY OF L PROMOTION MAW. SVNTI4 A E IXSY ! at grades 5 and 8? ! through 12? own still means something. Here in the Socialistic State of California our property rights are slowly being taken away. Please let me explain. In the city where we live the anti-growth people want to put a greenbelt around our city. If a person owns a farm within the greenbelt they can only farm on it; they can not divide it into lots to build on or they will be break- ing the law and won't be permit- ted to do so. Recently I read an article in which A1 Gore wants to float $10 billion worth of bonds to help cities control their outward growth. The article stated that A1 Gore's vision is to have high-dens- ity population in towns and cities and to create greenbelts around the populations of people. Al Gore's vision is to prevent sprawl outside of city boundaries and to keep the forest free of peo- ple. Does this sound familiar Ma- son County? Why is it when someone in Washington, D.C., comes up with an idea, every state in the union thinks it's a good idea and the taxpayers have to suffer? I sometimes wonder where these anti-growth groups get their marching orders from, don't you? We must elect to office officials that have our interest at heart and not push someone's agenda coming from Washington, D.C., Sacramento or Olympia. I don't care whether our elect- ed officials are Democrats or Re- publicans. They work for us, not the other way around. We voted them into office and we can vote them out of office if our rights as citizens are not protected. God bless America. Louis Cofoni Fairfield, California My kind of state Editor, The Journal: Could you please publish my letter in your paper so that your readers might help me with re- search about your state? In my seventh-grade social studies class in Chicago, we are studying United States history. One of our assignments is to write a research paper about a particular state and how it re- lates to the history of the country. I have chosen Washington as the subject of my research. I would very much appreciate if your readers could send me items that would be of interest. Post cards, newspapers with unique features about Washing- ton, clippings, articles, video- tapes, old license plates, unique products from your region or other items that might help geog- raphy and history to come alive in my classroom. The most remarkable part of the experience was the judges, none of whom I knew, but all of whom showed genuine in- terest, respect and appropriate- ness in their questioning and de- meanor with my young, nervous students. They seriously regarded the students and their work. For once, the first-graders were re- garded as the experts! If you were among that select group of indi- viduals, I commend you for your work! Lisa Queen Union thing especially interesting would make my report the best in the class. Please help me learn about your state and spark the interest of my classmates. Our school is on the northern side of Chicago, about six miles from the downtown area (The Loop). We have about 100 stu- dents in the seventh grade and about 1,000 students in our build- ing (K-8). Most of our students are either immigrants or children of recent immigrants. We have students from many parts of the world - Mexico, Bulgaria, Korea, Nigeria, India, Bosnia, Vietnam, Guatemala, The Philippines and many other places. Most of the students have not lived outside Chicago. I was born in Chicago, but my parents are from Mexico. I enjoy watching Cubs games and also watching Sammy Sosa hit some home runs. I also like to play baseball. I chose Washington be- cause I want to learn something I haven't learned about it. I look forward to receiving mail. Thank you for your interest in my education and your kind- ness. My address is Budlong Ele- mentary, Room 403, 2701 West Foster Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60625. "THERE ARE PARTS for everyone in this colorful pageant, Times and Trees, written by Caro- lyn Maddux," said Densley. "Especially needed are children to portray the Twana people and boys to play the parts of Governor Stevens, Sol Simpson, Captain Vancouver and the Bordeaux brothers." The pageant, she said, will in- by Paul Bunyan and Smokey Bear. Forest Festival, Densley said, was founded in 1945 to celebrate the lumber industry and remind residents to keep their forests green. "In those early years, a huge outdoor pageant was pre- sented by hundreds of local schoolchildren," Densley said. 'roday, many county adults recall their experiences in the pageant with affection. "Last year the Forest Festival board commissioned an historical play to be written that would again involve the young people of Mason County. Narration and ed, and production time was do- nated by Shelton studio personnel of Post Modern Media. "THE RESULTS were pre- sented last year to an enthusias- tic response," Densley pointed out. And, she added, by coincidence many of the area elementary schools have just finished a study unit on the history of Mason County. For more information, parents of potential actors and actresses can call play director Erin Brown at 426-1357 or Densley at 432- 8122. LORDY, LORDY, LOOK WHO'S FORTY!!
