Fast forgotten
Th 'sth "li b pl nyh

Amnesia it ain't.
After the season they endured
last year, though, the Climber
varsity fastpitch girls will settle
gladly for the selective memory
they're cultivating this week as
the nonleague "tuneup" season
gears up.
'Teah, we have tried not to dis-
cus it," says 18th-year head coach
Meredith Elkins, already saying
more than she cares to about '98's
long descent into 1-17 despair.
"It's been brought up at prac-
tice a couple of times, and there's
been some comments made. And
I've just kinda said, 'Well, there's
a reason for this - and let's move
on."
THE REASON, of course, is as
glaring as the loss total. The '98
Climbers lost their starting pitch-
er the week before turnout, two
all-leaguers before a week had
gone by and another couple regu-
lars before the season was half
over.
Coach Elkins, whose many
highwater marks in the sport in-
clude the Climbers' state cham-
pionship in 1989, recognized the
handwriting on the wall as early
as last year's opener.
"We had nine errors," she in-
tones. "It was TERRIBLE. And I
remember thinking, 'Oh. We don't
wanna do this one again.'
THE GOOD NEWS this time
around? Well, there's quite a bit
of it actually, says Coach.
For one thing, those aforemen-
tioned all-leaguers lost at the
outset last season are back and
rarin' to go - senior Britt Sande
(catcher) and junior Reagan
Settle (third base) having recov-
ered from knee and ankle injury,
respectively.
And back as well - without the
psychological baggage of a season
on the mend - are fellow all-
leaguers Aimee Auseth (first-
team outfielder, senior) and Tori
Kruger (second-team first-base-
man, junior), plus varsity main-
stays Kadie Hunter (junior),
Michele Quiggle (senior), Janeen
Omdahl (junior) and Tahnee Mill-
er (sophomore).
ROUNDING OUT the varsity
at this early juncture are return-
ing '98 part-timers Stephanie Da-
vis, Kaytie Maestas, Taja Nault,
Bree Olson and Marisa Stigall -
all sophomores with jayvee ex-
perience as well.
On the mound will be Miller,
Hunter and Stigall. The former,
says Elkins, is being groomed to
be Number One.
"Tahnee is a gifted athlete, and
she's a lot more determined this
year," says Coach.
PROOF CAME right off the
bat, so to speak, in last week's '99
opener, a nonleague clash with
River Ridge.
Young Tahnee combined with
Stigall to throw a no-hitter, and
the Climbers five-inninged their
hosts 14-4.
"And it was really important to
get that first win," says Coach, re-
minding again how much the
specter of last year figures into
the current team psyche. "It was
nice to see the players get excit-
ed."
MAKE NO MISTAKE, adds
Elkins. With the league's pitching
maybe not quite so formidable
this year, her Climbers' offensive
strengths are likely to serve them
more effectively and the win/loss
situation thus should follow suit.
Assuming, that is, one import-

"You talk to any professional
team, even," says the coach, "and
the reason they win is usually be-
cause key players stay healthy.

Fast forgotten

Amnesia it ain't.
After the season they endured
last year, though, the Climber
varsity fastpitch girls will settle
gladly for the selective memory
they're cultivating this week as
the nonleague "tuneup" season
gears up.
'Teah, we have tried not to dis-
cus it," says 18th-year head coach
Meredith Elkins, already saying
more than she cares to about '98's
long descent into 1-17 despair.
"It's been brought up at prac-
tice a couple of times, and there's
been some comments made. And
I've just kinda said, 'Well, there's
a reason for this - and let's move
on."
THE REASON, of course, is as
glaring as the loss total. The '98
Climbers lost their starting pitch-
er the week before turnout, two
all-leaguers before a week had
gone by and another couple regu-
lars before the season was half
over.
Coach Elkins, whose many
highwater marks in the sport in-
clude the Climbers' state cham-
pionship in 1989, recognized the
handwriting on the wall as early
as last year's opener.
"We had nine errors," she in-
tones. "It was TERRIBLE. And I
remember thinking, 'Oh. We don't
wanna do this one again.'
THE GOOD NEWS this time
around? Well, there's quite a bit
of it actually, says Coach.
For one thing, those aforemen-
tioned all-leaguers lost at the
outset last season are back and
rarin' to go - senior Britt Sande
(catcher) and junior Reagan
Settle (third base) having recov-
ered from knee and ankle injury,
respectively.
And back as well - without the
psychological baggage of a season
on the mend - are fellow all-
leaguers Aimee Auseth (first-
team outfielder, senior) and Tori
Kruger (second-team first-base-
man, junior), plus varsity main-
stays Kadie Hunter (junior),
Michele Quiggle (senior), Janeen
Omdahl (junior) and Tahnee Mill-
er (sophomore).
ROUNDING OUT the varsity
at this early juncture are return-
ing '98 part-timers Stephanie Da-
vis, Kaytie Maestas, Taja Nault,
Bree Olson and Marisa Stigall -
all sophomores with jayvee ex-
perience as well.
On the mound will be Miller,
Hunter and Stigall. The former,
says Elkins, is being groomed to
be Number One.
"Tahnee is a gifted athlete, and
she's a lot more determined this
year," says Coach.
PROOF CAME right off the
bat, so to speak, in last week's '99
opener, a nonleague clash with
River Ridge.
Young Tahnee combined with
Stigall to throw a no-hitter, and
the Climbers five-inninged their
hosts 14-4.
"And it was really important to
get that first win," says Coach, re-
minding again how much the
specter of last year figures into
the current team psyche. "It was
nice to see the players get excit-
ed."
MAKE NO MISTAKE, adds
Elkins. With the league's pitching
maybe not quite so formidable
this year, her Climbers' offensive
strengths are likely to serve them
more effectively and the win/loss
situation thus should follow suit.
Assuming, that is, one import-

"You talk to any professional
team, even," says the coach, "and
the reason they win is usually be-
cause key players stay healthy.
