By NORMA JANE CAMERON
After 10 years of active service
for their lake community, Bill
Weed and his wife, Vernice
(Vern), have retired as active
members of Lake Cushman Fire
District 18.
Eight years ago, the Weeds
were the first fire department
members to respond to my hus-
band's needs when he had to be
airlifted to Harborview Medical
Center's Intensive Care Unit from
Lake Cushman State Park. There
are many like me in this commu-
nity who will always remember
with thankfulness the couple's
dedicated work in the volunteer
fire department.
When my husband and I
moved here 20 years ago, there
was no fire hall and the few fire-
men in the department fought
fires with garden hoses. There
were no EMTs (emergency medi-
cal technicians) and no medical
vans.
THE LOCAL fire halls were
built by community members
with donated materials and labor.
The women held bake sales, Fun
Days and dinners, and sponsored
the annual Easter egg hunt and
activities to raise funds for the
department.
Last Friday, the Weeds dis-
cussed their work in the depart-
ment. First off, Bill wanted to
thank the Lake Cushman Booster
Club for its many years of finan-
cial support, and noted the count-
less individual members of the
community who donated money
and time for the fire district's
needs.
The one project Bill had hoped
to complete before retiring, he
said, was the payment of $4,711
needed to complete the payment
for the eight self-contained
breathing apparatus (SCBAs)

that replaced the units, more
than ten years old, that the de-
partment had been using pre-
viously.
Chief Weed had illustrated the
need with a thermometer whose
red mercury column showed how
much money had been donated
for the SCBAs. So far, $545 has
registered on the scale. The de-
partment paid for the apparatus
but the budget was short the
$4,711 that Weed hopes the fund
will provide. He noted that any-
one who wants to help can donate
to the fire district's fund, adding
that fire fighters must have the
breathing apparatus before they
can enter a burning, smoke-filled
structure.
WEED ALSO noted that
there are now two fire halls, Sta-
tion 1 on Standsill Drive and Sta-
tion 2 near the Division 3 park.
Both are now Red Croas-deaignat-
ed disaster sites. The American
Red Cross, he said, had given the
department members safety
classes and then rated the sta-
tions as disaster sites.
Art Thompson will serve as in-
terim chief and Bill Porr will
serve as assistant chief during
the interim.
The community will long re-
member the dedicated service of
Bill and Vern Weed to their com-
munity. Volunteer fire depart-
ments cannot function without
people who care as they do.

By NORMA JANE CAMERON
After 10 years of active service
for their lake community, Bill
Weed and his wife, Vernice
(Vern), have retired as active
members of Lake Cushman Fire
District 18.
Eight years ago, the Weeds
were the first fire department
members to respond to my hus-
band's needs when he had to be
airlifted to Harborview Medical
Center's Intensive Care Unit from
Lake Cushman State Park. There
are many like me in this commu-
nity who will always remember
with thankfulness the couple's
dedicated work in the volunteer
fire department.
When my husband and I
moved here 20 years ago, there
was no fire hall and the few fire-
men in the department fought
fires with garden hoses. There
were no EMTs (emergency medi-
cal technicians) and no medical
vans.
THE LOCAL fire halls were
built by community members
with donated materials and labor.
The women held bake sales, Fun
Days and dinners, and sponsored
the annual Easter egg hunt and
activities to raise funds for the
department.
Last Friday, the Weeds dis-
cussed their work in the depart-
ment. First off, Bill wanted to
thank the Lake Cushman Booster
Club for its many years of finan-
cial support, and noted the count-
less individual members of the
community who donated money
and time for the fire district's
needs.
The one project Bill had hoped
to complete before retiring, he
said, was the payment of $4,711
needed to complete the payment
for the eight self-contained
breathing apparatus (SCBAs)

that replaced the units, more
than ten years old, that the de-
partment had been using pre-
viously.
Chief Weed had illustrated the
need with a thermometer whose
red mercury column showed how
much money had been donated
for the SCBAs. So far, $545 has
registered on the scale. The de-
partment paid for the apparatus
but the budget was short the
$4,711 that Weed hopes the fund
will provide. He noted that any-
one who wants to help can donate
to the fire district's fund, adding
that fire fighters must have the
breathing apparatus before they
can enter a burning, smoke-filled
structure.
WEED ALSO noted that
there are now two fire halls, Sta-
tion 1 on Standsill Drive and Sta-
tion 2 near the Division 3 park.
Both are now Red Croas-deaignat-
ed disaster sites. The American
Red Cross, he said, had given the
department members safety
classes and then rated the sta-
tions as disaster sites.
Art Thompson will serve as in-
terim chief and Bill Porr will
serve as assistant chief during
the interim.
The community will long re-
member the dedicated service of
Bill and Vern Weed to their com-
munity. Volunteer fire depart-
ments cannot function without
people who care as they do.
