leage 18 SHELTON-MASON COUNTY JOURNAL m Published in "Chrislmastowu. U.g.A.," Shelton, Washington Thursday, M .... !: CHRIST IS RISEN How can we know that Jesus lives, that Christ is risen? Ve have the testimony of the empty tomb, and of many witnemqes, and of His Word, and the Spirit within our hearts. We thank God, too, for the many believers who live on such a high plane of faith that the glory of the risen and living Sav- ior is reflected in their lives. However, ever since the day the Pharisees paid money to the Ro- man soldiers to tell the lie, "that Hi, disciples, came and stole His body," atheists, agnostics, unbe- lievers and modernists have moved heaven and earth to disprove the miracle of the resurrection. They have sought to discredit this most arresting fact of human history, that the empty tomb of Christ is the conwncing power of His resur- rection, THE TESTIMONY OF THE SCRIPTURES If Christ is not risen, the Word )f God is a lie. For in the Prop- hets. in the Parables. and in the direct statements of the Lord Je- sus Christ Himself, His resurrec- tion is mentioned more than 100 times. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament give some wonderful testimonies to this great] truth. Listen to what Jesus said about the resurrection. After He had driven the money changers from the temple, the Jews had said to Him, "What sign showest thou unto us, for doing this? Jesus an- swered them. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up .... VChcn therefore he was raised from the dead. his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the Word which Jesus had spok- en." gohn 2:18-22). In John 10, Jesus spoke these words that also prophecy of His resurrection, "I lay down my life, that I may take it again." And when the scribes and pharisees be- gan to question His authority, ask- ing t]im to prove that He was the Son of God, He said, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall be no sign be given it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah, for as Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12439-40). As we look to the Scriptures, Christ's appearances to His dis- ciples are further proof of His resurrection. It was indeed a living Christ who inspired the saints ef the ear- ly Church. It was a living Christ who led them out into all the world to preach the Gospel. It was a living Christ who fired the Chris- tians with zeal on the Dty of Pen- tecost. It was a living Christ who inspired Paul to reach the world with the Gospel. And it has been a living Christ that has bcen real to true believers ever since and who fulfills His promis¢,, "And lo, I am with you even unto the end of the world." (Matt. 28:20). FAITH AND SALVATION REST ON THE RESURRECTION If there was no remrrection, our faith is in vain. Our hope of sal- vation is also vain. If H, did not rise, He did not atone for sin; and not a single stain of sin in all the world has been washed away. There. are m a n y wonderful truths which are precious to be- lieving Christians to which the Holy Scriptures testify, that can be denied without a guilty con- science if we can deny the glor- ious fact of the Risen Christ. But to a world which is searching for certainties other th armed might will cO time again the sl)iri of a living Savior able h) heal and h Easter will again P" pel of hope beyond material.
