Shooting: Incident took place at Mason Lake house continued from page A-1 Wednesday. The investigation was turned over to the Region III Critical Incident Team, which includes the Washington State Patrol and the sher- iffs offices of Thurston, Lewis, Grays Harbor, Pacific and Mason counties. Thurston County Sheriffs Office is leading the investigation, the Mason County Sheriffs Office stated in a news release. . The Mason County coroner’s office identified the woman as Kathryn R. Hale. . In an interview with the Shelton- Mason County Journal, Thurston County Sheriffs Office Lt. Ray Brady', the CIT commander for the shooting said Mason County Sheriffs deputies arrived about p.m. Tuesday at a house off Mason Lake to arrest Hale on several felony warrants. Hale did not live in that house, but was a Ma— son County resident, he said. A news release from the Mason County Sheriffs Office states the dep- uty was on foot when Hale appears to have tried to run over the deputy with a car. The deputy was hit by the vehicle and “at some point” fired his weapon at the suspect, the release said. The deputies pursued the woman for a few miles. The deputies aided Hale before EMS workers arrived, but the woman died en route to Mason General Hos- pital. The deputy suffered minor inju- ries, Brady said. Murphy’s friend tested negative for the coronavirus, but Murphy’s em- ployer in Chehalis won’t let her return to the office until she receives her re- sults. Her 10-year-old daughter, Bri, is home, as is Murphy’s husband, Ian, and another relative. “I’m home with four people, not working, child home six weeks, no school online paperwork or criteria to follow on the website,” she said. “Mak- ing food with what you have in cabi- nets and the freezer. No friends com- ing over.” In the meantime, she’s losing wag- es. v “I’m worrying about paying bills and our landlord is a disbarred attor- ney and will make sure we still have to pay our rent,” Murphy said. Murphy said she bought Bri a cell- phone “because of the time of change and the virus and being home from school, who would have ever thought she would have one this young? Times sure have changed.” Paul Nakhla directs the choirs at Oakland Bay Junior High School and Shelton High School, which have been closed since March ‘13. “Our home has received two of our university students back from Spo- kane, so we are a crowded house of seven trying to figure out how to best deal with the, isolation from our broad- er communities,” he said. “We hope to be useful around the community with- out coming in contact with others, in order to neither inadvertently spread or receive this virus. We want to be part of the solution and not the prob- lem.” N akhla added, “Otherwise, with the beautiful sunshine outside and nice weather, it feels a bit like an early summer break, with all the kids home and limited schooling happening.” Sewer; County will pay 0.79% interest on loan - continued from page A—1 The BOCC originally had an agen- da item that proposed increasing the sewer rate for 2020, but that item was removed —- as were other financial stipulations — from the agenda on Monday. Mason County received ,the.loan" offer from the state’s Public Works Board in August. On Feb. 11, staff presented a sewer extension predesign report and a sewer system financial analysis to the county commissioners. The county will pay a 0.79% inter- est rate on the 20-year loan, according to county documents. That rate could shrink — or the county could get more time to repay it -— if the county meets performance incentives. For example, if the county submits a certified project completion report Within 48 months of the contract, it could get 24 additional months to pay off the loan, or reduce the interest rate by 0.25%, according to the county. Bremerton has also committed $1 million to the sewer extension to the Puget Sound Industrial Center. The City of Bremerton and the Port of Bremerton met Feb. 28 to review a predesign report. The waste sewer system began servicing Belfair in 2012. State au- dits have concluded that the system’s funding puts it at risk of being unable to meet financial obligations because it doesn’t generate enough revenue to cover its expenses. The county has used money from its real estate excise tax to subsidize the Belfair sewer system.
